Kenyan visa policy for British citizens

United Kingdom citizens need travel authorization to visit Kenya, and all travelers must obtain an approved Kenyan Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before departure. Once approved, it generally allows UK travelers to stay in Kenya for up to 90 days per visit, with the possibility of an extension through Kenya’s Directorate of Immigration Services.

iVisa offers one entry document for UK travelers:

  • Kenyan eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization): A mandatory online travel authorization that allows United Kingdom citizens to enter Kenya for tourism, business, or family visits. It must be approved before boarding your flight.

General Kenya visa requirements for UK travelers are:

  • A United Kingdom passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay
  • Passport-style photo
  • Confirmed onward or return travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay

FAQs

Yes. UK citizens must obtain an approved Kenyan Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before traveling. Kenya replaced its previous visa-free and eVisa system with the mandatory eTA requirement in 2024.

The Kenyan eTA typically allows UK citizens to stay for up to 90 days per visit. Extensions may be possible through Kenya’s immigration authorities, subject to approval.

Kenyan eTA applications are often processed within 24 hours, but travelers are strongly advised to apply at least 72 hours before departure to avoid delays.
If you do not have an approved eTA, your airline may deny boarding, or you may face entry refusal or delays on arrival. The eTA is mandatory for all foreign nationals traveling to Kenya.

Yes. The Kenyan eTA is valid for entry through airports, seaports, and land border crossings, including borders with Tanzania and Uganda.

Yes, extensions may be available, but are not guaranteed. Travelers must apply through a local immigration office before their permitted stay expires.
