French citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Kenya for short stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Kenya operates under a visa-free regime where all foreign nationals must obtain a digital travel authorization before arrival instead of a traditional embassy-issued visa.

French travelers need one Kenya entry document:

Kenya ETA: A mandatory online travel authorization that must be obtained before starting your journey. It's typically processed within three business days and allows French citizens to enter Kenya for a single stay of up to 90 days. Every traveler, including infants and children, must have an individual approved ETA to board a flight or enter via land/sea borders.

General Kenya entry requirements for French travelers are:

French passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date
Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
Evidence of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay
Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or host address)
Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory if arriving from a high-risk country)
Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Is the Kenya ETA the same as a visa?

No. As of 2024, the traditional visa for French citizens was replaced by the Kenya ETA. While it serves a similar purpose—authorizing your entry—it's a digital security pre-screening rather than a formal visa. You must apply for it online before you travel; you cannot obtain a visa at the Kenyan Embassy in Paris for standard tourism or business.

Can I get a Kenya ETA or visa at the airport in Nairobi?

No. Kenya has abolished all visas-on-arrival. All French travelers must have an approved Kenya ETA before boarding their flight. Airlines are required to check for this digital authorization during check-in, and you won't be allowed to fly without it.

Do French children and infants need their own individual ETA?

es. In the current system, every traveler, regardless of age, must have their own approved Kenya ETA. Even infants must have a separate application submitted on their behalf.

Can I leave Kenya to visit a neighboring country and return on the same ETA?

Yes, if you're visiting a member of the East African Community (EAC)—including Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, or the DRC. You can re-enter Kenya on your original ETA without applying for a new one, provided your 90-day stay hasn't expired, and you haven't traveled to any country outside the EAC block.

How long can I stay in Kenya, and can I extend my visit?

The initial Kenya ETA allows for a stay of up to 90 days. If you find yourself not wanting to leave, you can apply for an extension of an additional 90 days. This is done through the eCitizen portal or in person at the Immigration Office in Nairobi. This brings the maximum total stay for a visitor to 180 days.
