Sri Lanka visa requirements for French citizens

French citizens don’t currently need a visa to visit Sri Lanka for short stays of up to 30 days for tourism or business. French travelers need one Sri Lanka entry document: Sri Lanka ETA: A mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization that must be secured at least 3 days before arrival. This is issued for 30-day stays and allows double entry within that period. General Sri Lanka entry requirements for French travelers are: French passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date; Confirmed return or onward flight ticket; Evidence of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay; Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or host address); Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation (e.g., business invitation letter).

Sri Lanka visa FAQs

What French travelers commonly ask about Sri Lanka visas

The standard 30-day ETA for French citizens allows for two entries into the country. This is ideal if you're planning a brief excursion to a nearby destination (like the Maldives) and wish to return to Sri Lanka. Your 30-day stay begins on your first entry date and doesn't pause while you're abroad.

Yes. While the online ETA is the recommended method to avoid delays, Visa on Arrival counters are available at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). However, you'll likely face longer queues. Securing your ETA at least 72 hours before you fly is the safest option.

If you wish to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for an extension of stay through the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo or their official online portal. You can extend your stay for up to six months total.

Yes. Every traveler, regardless of age, must have their own approved ETA to enter the country. While fees are sometimes waived for children under the age of 12, depending on current government policy, you must still complete a separate online application for them and receive a unique approval confirmation.

If your layover is less than 48 hours and you intend to leave the airport, you must apply for a Transit ETA. If you remain in the airport transit lounge and don't clear immigration, no ETA is required.
