What does the double-entry facility mean for a 30-day ETA?
The standard tourist ETA allows you to enter Sri Lanka twice within the authorized 30-day stay. This is particularly useful if you're planning a side trip to a neighboring country (like the Maldives) and wish to return. Your 30-day stay starts on the date of your first entry and continues to count down even while you're outside Sri Lanka.
Is a Visa on Arrival (VoA) still an option for German citizens?
Yes. While the online ETA is the primary and recommended method to avoid long queues, the Visa on Arrival counters at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) remain available. However, obtaining a VoA may involve significant wait times at the border. It’s always safer to secure your approval before you fly.
Can I extend my stay in Sri Lanka beyond the initial 30 days?
Yes. If you wish to stay longer, you can apply for an Extension of Stay at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo or through their official online extension portal. You can extend your stay for up to six months in total. Please note that extension fees apply and vary depending on the length of the additional stay requested.
Do German children and infants need their own ETA?
Yes. Every traveler, regardless of age, must have their own approved ETA to enter the country. While fees are sometimes waived for children under the age of 12 depending on current government policy, you must still complete a separate online application for them and receive a unique approval confirmation.
How far in advance should I apply for my Sri Lanka ETA?
