Indian visa policy for German citizens

German citizens need a visa to visit India for tourism, business, or medical purposes. Most travelers apply for the Indian eVisa online, which must be approved before travel. While the eVisa grants multiple entries, German tourists are restricted to a maximum stay of 90 days per visit, not exceeding 180 days in a single calendar year.\n
\n
\nGerman travelers need two Indian entry documents:\n
\n
\n India eVisa: A mandatory online visa for tourism, business, or medical stays. It must be applied for at least four days before departure. Once granted, it allows German citizens to enter India for stays of up to 90 days per visit (tourism) or 180 days (business) via 33 designated airports and 19 seaports.\n
\n
\n
India e-Arrival Card: A mandatory digital disembarkation form that must be submitted within 72 hours before arrival. Travelers must present the generated QR code to immigration officers to clear border control.\n
\n
\nGeneral India entry requirements for German travelers are:\n
\n
\n German passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date \n Confirmed return or onward flight ticket\n Proof of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay\n Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation (e.g., business invitation or medical letter)

Frequently asked questions about getting the India visa with a Germany passport

Yes. German citizens must have a visa to enter India. Most travelers choose the India eVisa, which is available for tourism, business, and medical purposes. You must apply for this online at least four days before your flight. You'll receive your eVisa authorization via email, which you must print and carry with you for boarding and immigration.

For German citizens, the 1-year and 5-year Tourist eVisas allow for multiple entries, but each continuous stay cannot exceed 90 days. Additionally, your total stay in India within a single calendar year (January to December) cannot exceed 180 days, regardless of how many times you enter and exit the country.

No. The India eVisa (Tourist, Business, or Medical) is non-extendable and non-convertible. If you wish to stay longer than your eVisa allows, you must leave India and apply for a new visa. The only exceptions are for emergency medical situations or specific long-term visas processed through the e-FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) portal, but this does not apply to standard tourism.

Yes. You can only enter India through 33 designated international airports (including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru) and 19 designated seaports if you're using an eVisa. If you intend to enter India via a land border (e.g., from Nepal) or a non-designated port, you cannot use an eVisa and must apply for a traditional sticker visa at an Indian embassy or consulate in Germany before you travel.
