Kenyan visa policy for Italian citizens

Italian citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Kenya for short stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Kenya operates under a visa-free regime where all foreign nationals must obtain a digital travel authorization before arrival instead of a traditional embassy-issued visa.

Italian travelers need one Kenya entry document:

Kenya ETA: A mandatory online travel authorization that must be obtained before starting your journey. It's typically processed within three business days and allows Italian citizens to enter Kenya for a single stay of up to 90 days. Every traveler, including infants and children, must have an individual approved ETA to board a flight or enter via land/sea borders.

General Kenya entry requirements for Italian travelers are:

  • Italian passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or host address)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory if arriving from a high-risk country)
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Kenya visa with a Italy passport

Yes. As of 2024, Kenya replaced traditional visas with the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. You don't need to visit the Kenyan Embassy in Rome or Milan anymore. However, the ETA is not optional—it's a mandatory digital entry permit. You must apply and receive approval online before you're even allowed to board your flight from Italy.

No. Kenya has completely abolished visas-on-arrival. All Italian travelers must secure their Kenya ETA at least 72 hours before departure. If you show up at the airport in Italy without a printed or digital copy of your approved ETA, the airline will legally have to deny you boarding.

Yes. In a shift from older visa policies where minors were sometimes exempt or included on a parent's application, every traveler, regardless of age, must have their own approved Kenya ETA.

Yes, thanks to the East African Community (EAC) regional exception. If you travel from Kenya to Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, or South Sudan and return directly to Kenya, you don't need to pay for a new ETA. This only applies if your original 90-day stay hasn't expired and you haven't traveled to any country outside this regional block.

The initial Kenya ETA allows for a stay of up to 90 days. If you find yourself not wanting to leave, you can apply for an extension of an additional 90 days. This is done through the eCitizen portal or in person at the Immigration Office in Nairobi. This brings the maximum total stay for a visitor to 180 days.
