Laos visa requirements for Chinese citizens
Chinese citizens must obtain a visa to visit Laos for short stays. Ordinary passport holders traveling for tourism can obtain an eVisa for up to 30 days, while business travelers aren't visa-exempt and must obtain a business visa prior to departure. Chinese diplomatic and official passport holders are generally visa-exempt under bilateral arrangements — verify with the issuing authority before travel. Additionally, travelers crossing at the four checkpoints where it is in use must complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) online within 3 days before entering and leaving the country. The visa and the LDIF are two different requirements, and holding one does not cover the other. Chinese travelers will need two Laos entry documents:
Laos Tourist eVisa: An electronic visa that allows Chinese citizens to enter Laos for short-term tourism stays. It must be approved before travel and is valid for a single entry. With an approved Laos eVisa, Chinese travelers can usually stay in Laos for up to 30 days per visit. The Laos eVisa is accepted at major entry points, including Wattay International Airport (Vientiane), Luang Prabang International Airport, and Pakse International Airport. Travelers should print or save a digital copy of their eVisa approval to present at check-in and upon arrival.
Laos Digital Immigration Form: A mandatory online arrival and departure registration required for foreign travelers crossing at the four checkpoints where it is in use. It must be completed within 3 days before arrival and departure. It generates a QR code scanned at border checkpoints to streamline immigration clearance. It functions as an arrival/departure card and doesn't replace a visa.

Do Chinese citizens need a visa to visit Laos for tourism?
Yes. Ordinary Chinese passport holders must obtain a visa to visit Laos for up to 30 days. You can secure an electronic visa (eVisa) online prior to departure or purchase a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at authorized entry ports. Chinese diplomatic and official passport holders are generally exempt under bilateral arrangements — verify with the issuing authority before travel.
Is the Laos Digital Immigration Form the same as the visa?
No, and holding one does not cover the other. The eVisa is permission to enter; the LDIF is a registration that replaced the paper arrival and departure cards. At the four checkpoints where it is in use, every traveler files it regardless of nationality or visa.
Is the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) mandatory for Chinese visitors?
Yes, at the four checkpoints where it is in use. The LDIF is a mandatory arrival and departure registration form there, and Chinese travelers crossing at those checkpoints must complete it online within 3 days before entry and exit. It generates a QR code scanned at border checkpoints and doesn't replace your visa.
How can a Chinese citizen extend their tourist stay beyond 30 days?
You can extend a 30-day tourist stay once, for an additional 30 days. The application must be submitted in person at the Department of Immigration in Vientiane or a provincial immigration office before your current stay expires.
Does the Laos Digital Immigration Form apply to land border crossings?
It applies to four checkpoints: Wattay International Airport, Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse International Airport, and the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I. Travelers using any other crossing, including several on the China-Laos border, are still processed on paper.
What are the immigration fines if a Chinese citizen overstays their visa in Laos?
If you overstay without an approved extension, commonly reported figures are 100,000 Lao kip (roughly $5 USD) to $10 USD per overstayed day, collected at border control on departure, and serious or extended overstays can lead to detention, deportation, or a re-entry ban. Confirm the current rules with Lao immigration if you have overstayed.
