Japan eVisa requirements
Eligible visitors to Japan must obtain either a Japan eVisa in advance, unless they are citizens of one of the 70+ visa-exempt countries (such as the US, UK, or EU members). The Japan eVisa is meant for tourism purposes only.
Unlike the traditional process, the eVisa is fully digital. There is no need to mail your passport or visit a Japanese consulate or embassy.

- Who it's for
- Travelers going to Japan for tourism who need a visa, and who live in one of the countries covered by the online route. Eligibility follows your country of residence rather than your nationality, and several markets have to file through an accredited agency instead. It is open to ordinary passport holders only.
- Permitted activities
- Tourism, and nothing else. Visiting friends or relatives, business, study, work, and transit are all excluded and go through a consulate on paper. It admits you once, and there is no multiple-entry option online.
- How you travel
- You may arrive by air, or on the scheduled international passenger ferries between Japan and Busan or Shanghai. No other sea route works, and land entry is not possible.
- Delivery format
- Fully digital, with no sticker in your passport and no need to mail it anywhere. You show the online Visa Issuance Notice with its QR code on a mobile device at check-in. A PDF, a screenshot, or a printout is not accepted, so you need the device with you.
- Good to know
- Each minor needs their own, and a child traveling without a parent or guardian needs a parental consent form. A family can apply together when everyone shares the same itinerary and consular jurisdiction, but all members must be registered in one sitting. Renewing your passport after applying voids it and means starting again.
- Validity
- Valid for 90 days
- Entry
- Single entry
- Length of stay
- Stay up to 90 days per entry
- Processing time
- Get it in as fast as 5 days

No waiting for days or weeks: the entry visa grant came within a half hour or less. It could not have been easier or quicker!

Japan visa FAQs
Quick answers to the most common questions about the Japan eVisa.
Still have questions?
Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.
Do I need a visa for Japan?
If your nationality is on Japan's visa-free list (e.g., USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and many European countries), you can enter without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism.
However, travelers from countries like India, China, the Philippines, and Vietnam who reside in eligible regions must apply for an eVisa if they wish to visit for tourism.
If you are not eligible for the eVisa and not visa-exempt, you must apply for a traditional sticker visa at an embassy.
How will I receive the Japan eVisa?
If you applied through iVisa, we'll send you instructions on how to access your Visa Issuance Notice through your dashboard, so you know exactly what to expect.
You'll receive a notification by email once your visa is issued. Unlike other visas, you don't simply print a PDF — you log in to the official system via a mobile device at the airport to display the "Visa Issuance Notice." Screenshots or printed copies are generally not accepted at the immigration counter, so you need a live internet connection to show the digital barcode.
Free WiFi is available at almost all major Japanese airports, including Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Tokyo Haneda (HND).
What is the official Japan eVisa website?
iVisa makes applying for your Japan eVisa easy: we prepare your application, check it for errors, and file it through the correct government channel for you, so you don't have to navigate the official process alone.
The eVisa itself is issued through Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs at evisa.mofa.go.jp, the only official government channel. If you come across another site calling itself the "Japan eVisa website," it isn't affiliated with the government.
How do I check my Japan eVisa application status?
If you applied through iVisa, log in to your iVisa dashboard any time to check your status.
If you applied directly with the Japanese government, sign back in at the official eVisa portal (evisa.mofa.go.jp) with the email address you registered. They'll email you a one-time code to log in, rather than a saved password.
How long can I stay in Japan with an eVisa?
The Japan eVisa allows for a stay of up to 90 days. Note that the visa itself is only valid for 3 months from the date of issuance, meaning you must enter Japan within 90 days of getting the visa approved.
What is the processing time of the Japan eVisa?
The Japanese government typically takes about 5 to 10 business days to process an application once it is "Under Examination." However, we recommend applying at least 3 to 4 weeks before your trip to account for potential requests for additional documents or high application volumes during peak seasons (like Cherry Blossom or Autumn Foliage). With iVisa, you choose your processing speed at checkout, and the option you pick is shown with its delivery time before you pay.
Can I only use the Japan eVisa for tourism?
Yes. This eVisa is meant for tourism visits only, so you will have to provide your travel plans and hotel/accommodation bookings. If you want to visit Japan for business or visiting family, you must apply for a different visa via the Japanese embassy or consulate and provide other documents, such as an invitation letter, business communication, and more, depending on your travel purpose.
Can I extend my eVisa while I am in Japan?
No. The Japan eVisa is a single-entry visa and cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a different visa category (such as a work or student visa) at an immigration office, which is a much more complex process.
Do children/minors need a Japanese eVisa?
Yes. Every traveler, including infants and minors, must have their own visa unless they are from a visa-exempt country. Parents can manage the application for their children through iVisa by using the "Add another person" option.
What is JESTA and do I need it?
Japan is planning to roll out the JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization) from the end of 2028. This is similar to the US ESTA and will eventually be required for travelers from visa-exempt countries. If you are already required to apply for a Japan eVisa or embassy visa, you do not need JESTA.
Do I need the Japan eVisa for transit?
If you are staying within the international transit area of the airport to catch a connecting flight, you do not need a visa. However, if you need to clear immigration to collect luggage, change airports (e.g., from Narita to Haneda), or stay in a hotel outside the terminal, you will need a valid eVisa or a Transit Visa.
What happens if my Japanese eVisa application is denied?
If your Japan eVisa is denied, you'll typically need to submit a new application. We also offer denial protection as an optional add-on to your application. In some cases, our experts can help you reapply.
What are the most common reasons a Japanese eVisa application is denied?
The most common reason for rejection is failure to meet the strict photo standards; even wearing glasses often leads to rejection. With iVisa, your photo will undergo expert review to make sure it meets all government requirements, avoid costly mistakes and rejection or delays.
