Japanese visa policy for Indonesian citizens

Indonesian citizens need a visa to visit Japan. Japan offers both traditional embassy-issued visas and an electronic visa (eVisa) system under specific conditions. Residents of the following countries or territories may apply online for a Japan eVisa, valid for a single entry and allowing a stay of up to 90 days: Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

iVisa offers one entry document for Indonesia travelers:

  • Japan Tourist Visa / eVisa (when eligible): A mandatory visa that allows Indonesia citizens to enter Japan for short-term tourism purposes. It must be approved before travel, either through the eVisa system (if eligible) or through an embassy/authorized visa center.

General Japan visa requirements for Indonesia travelers are:

  • An Indonesia passport valid for the duration of stay
  • Completed visa application form
  • Passport-style photo
  • Confirmed onward or return travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation and travel itinerary
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Additional supporting documents if requested (employment proof, invitation letter, residency proof, etc.)

FAQs

It depends on your passport type. Indonesian citizens with an e-passport (electronic passport) may be able to enter Japan visa-free for short-term visits if they complete the required registration process before traveling. However, Indonesian citizens with a regular (non-electronic) passport generally need to apply for a Japan eVisa in advance.

To avoid issues, check your passport type early and confirm whether a visa application must be registered for your specific case.

Government processing usually takes 5–10 working days.

Indonesian citizens can stay in Japan for up to 90 days.

Most applicants need to show they can afford the trip. This is commonly done through bank statements (showing recent transactions and balance) and sometimes additional proof like salary slips of other income documentation.

If someone else will pay for your travel, you may need a sponsorship letter plus the sponsor’s bank documents. The key is that the documents must clearly demonstrate your ability (or your sponsor’s) to cover your expenses in Japan.

If you're staying with a friend or family member in Japan, you may be asked for an invitation letter explaining your relationship and the purpose of your visit. In some cases, a guarantee letter may also be required, especially if your host is supporting your expenses.

You may also need a copy of your host’s identification/residence details, as well as proof of where you will stay (their address). Having clear, consistent documents helps avoid delays and makes it easier to verify the purpose of the trip.
