Thailand has introduced a temporary work permit for foreign nationals applying for non-BOI electronic work permits. The measure lets eligible applicants begin working while their full application is processed, and it is part of Thailand’s move to a new e-Work Permit system.
Previously, applicants typically had to wait for formal work permit approval before employment could begin. The new process issues a temporary permit that is valid during the review period, closing that gap.
Who qualifies, and for how long
The temporary permit applies only to non-BOI work permit applications submitted through Thailand’s electronic system. It does not extend to permits issued through the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), which keeps a separate application process.
The temporary permit remains valid for up to 15 days while authorities process the full electronic application. It is coordinated through Thailand’s Department of Employment and Ministry of Labour, and it does not change the core work permit eligibility criteria.
What it means for other travelers
