Qatar has announced the automatic and free extension of all entry visas in response to the sudden closure of its airspace amid escalating conflict in the Middle East. In a press release shared on Qatar's Ministry of Interior X account on March 3, 2026, the ministry confirmed the extension is effective from Saturday, February 28, 2026.
All categories of entry visas that have expired or are nearing expiration will be extended for one month, subject to further extension depending on developments.
The extension will be processed automatically through the approved electronic systems, with exemption from fees, and without the need to visit the relevant departments or submit additional applications.
What travelers with overstayed visas need to do
Individuals who overstayed their legal period of stay before February 28 must first settle the prescribed reconciliation fine for the period of overstay. Once the fine is paid, the free extension will apply to them from the announced date.
Why Qatar closed its airspace
On February 28, at least eight states declared their airspace closed following US and Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliation by Tehran on targets across the region. The affected countries include Iran, Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.
Qatar Airways and several other regional carriers temporarily suspended flights. Since the closure, no commercial flights have operated to or from Qatar.
Qatar joins several other destinations, including Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, and the Maldives, that have urgently adjusted their visa policies in response to disruptions caused by the crisis.
