Other eVisa categories exist for specific short-term needs, such as a Journalist Visa for media work, an NGO Visa for short assignments with recognized organizations, or a Medical Visa for treatment in Ethiopian facilities. Some applications may need an invitation letter or other supporting proof.
With an eVisa, plan to arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, where your passport will be stamped. eVisas are not processed at land borders.
If your trip involves work, long-term stays, residence, or extended study, a Tourist or Business eVisa is not suitable. If you need more time, apply for an extension before your current permission ends. Depending on your case, this can be done online near the expiry date or in person at the Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) office in Addis Ababa.
Overstaying leads to daily fines, and you cannot depart until all fines are paid. Apply for an extension in time or leave before your eVisa expires.

- Ethiopian Airlines stopover: If you have a long layover (typically 8 to 24 hours), you may be eligible for Ethiopian Airlines' complimentary stopover package, which often includes a transit visa and a hotel. You must confirm this with the airline directly.
4. Is the yellow fever vaccine mandatory for travelers arriving from Egypt to Ethiopia?
No, a yellow fever vaccine certificate is not mandatory if you are traveling directly from Egypt. The World Health Organization (WHO) does not list Egypt as a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. You are only required to have the certificate if you are arriving from, or have transited for more than 12 hours in, a country that is on the yellow fever risk list.
5. What are the currency declaration rules for Egyptians carrying USD to Ethiopia?
Ethiopia has very strict currency regulations. All foreign nationals must follow these rules:
- Entering Ethiopia: You must declare any foreign currency (like USD) if the total amount exceeds $10,000 (or its equivalent).
- Exiting Ethiopia: Non-resident travelers cannot leave with more than $3,000 (or its equivalent) in foreign currency unless they can provide the original customs declaration form they filed upon entry.
- Local currency: You cannot bring in or take out more than 3,000 Ethiopian Birr (ETB).
