Our Djibouti visa application process

How to apply for your Djibouti e-Visa with iVisa

1

Complete your online application

Answer a few simple questions, find out whether you need an e-Visa, upload your documents, and pay securely. You can save your progress and come back anytime.

The Djibouti e-Visa is our most popular option for short visits. Whatever your travel plans, we’ll guide you through each step to make sure your application is accurate and complete.

2

We review your application

The Djibouti visa system is known for being difficult to navigate – your photo must be the right size, and your passport scan must be clear.

We check for errors, missing information, or anything that could slow down your approval.

3

We submit it for government processing

We’re not the Djibouti government, but we submit your application to them and are here for you along the way if there are any problems.

4

Get your Djibouti e-Visa

Once your application is approved, we’ll notify you right away. Your approved e-Visa will be sent directly to your email.

💡Pro tip: Although standard processing takes 1–3 business days, it's wise to apply at least 7–10 days before your trip. This buffer helps account for delays.

Visa types needed for Djibouti

Djibouti Tourist e-Visa

The Djibouti eVisa is designed for travelers visiting Djibouti for tourism or short-term business. It can be used at Ambouli International Airport and land border checkpoints.

If you’re applying for tourism or business purposes, you will be issued a 90-day visa. If your purpose of travel is transit, you’ll be granted a 14-day visa. Both are single-entry permits and valid for 90 days from the date of issue.

To apply for the Djibouti eVisa, you’ll need:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date in the country
  • A recent passport photo with a white background
  • Proof of accommodation (e.g., a hotel booking)
  • Proof of return or onward travel (e.g., flight tickets)
  • An invitation letter (from your host or inviting organization with their contacts)

Other Djibouti visas*

Diplomatic, Official & Service Visa – Issued for government or diplomatic travel, with duration and entries depending on mission status.

Entry Visa (Precursor to Work/Residence/Study) – A required first step for long-term stay (work, study, or residency), usually single-entry and non-extendable, followed by a residence permit.

Work Permit/Visa – Granted for employment in Djibouti, renewable based on contract, and requires an employer application.

Residence Permit – Required for long-term residence after an entry visa or work permit, renewable through the Ministry of Interior, and functions as official ID.

*We currently don't offer these Djibouti visas, but you can apply via the Djibouti government.

Djibouti visa policy

Djibouti’s visa rules depend on nationality, purpose of visit, and length of stay. Visa-free entry is limited to some diplomatic and service passport holders, while most travelers need a visa in advance.

Tourists and short-term business visitors can apply online for a 14-day or 90-day single-entry eVisa, valid for 90 days from issuance. It must be obtained before arrival and shown at official entry points, including Ambouli International Airport.

For longer stays (work, study, or residence), travelers must apply through a Djiboutian embassy or consulate, usually with local sponsorship. These visas are converted into residence permits after arrival.

All visitors need a passport valid six months beyond entry, plus documents like proof of accommodation, onward travel, and a photo. A yellow fever certificate is required if arriving from at-risk areas.

Overstays can lead to fines, and extensions must be requested in advance. Djibouti emphasizes digital visa processing, so travelers should confirm current requirements with the nearest embassy or consulate.
