How to apply for the New Zealand Visitor Visa

What can you do with the New Zealand Visitor Visa?

Restrictions:

  • You cannot work, study long-term, or reside permanently
  • You cannot access public funds
  • You cannot come to New Zealand on a general visitor visa to get married or register a civil partnership

Who requires the New Zealand Visitor Visa?

Visa-required - Citizens from countries such as China, India, South Africa, the Philippines, Vietnam, and many more need a Visitor Visa.

Visa-exempt - Countries with visa-waiver agreements such as:

  • Europe: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom (permanent residents), and more.
  • Americas: Canada, USA, Argentina, Brazil, and more.
  • Asia: Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and more.

Minors: Children under 18 also require a Visitor Visa or NZeTA depending upon their country of citizenship.

Visa-exempt travelers have to still apply for the New Zealand Travel Authority (NZeTA).

New Zealand Visitor Visa validity and extensions

  • Stay up to nine months
  • Extensions of up to three months over and beyond the nine months are possible under certain conditions (e.g., extended tourist plans, humanitarian reasons, unforeseen circumstances, pandemics, etc.)
  • Proof of financial means or support may be required for extensions
  • If you’ve stayed 12 months within a 24-month period, you must leave and wait 12 months before reapplying

New Zealand Visitor Visa required documents

To apply for the Visitor Visa, you must submit:

  • Passport copy and residency proof (if applicable)
  • Recent photo
  • Travel itinerary (hotel reservations, return tickets)
  • Financial proof (bank statements, credit card statements)
  • Australian Visa (if planning to visit Australia)
  • Health certificates (e.g., chest x-ray) if required
  • Police certificate for stays longer than 24 months

Applications for minors must include:

  • Completed application by a parent/legal guardian
  • Birth certificate
  • Consent from non-accompanying parent(s), if applicable
