Do Canadian citizens require a visa to visit Belize for a holiday?
No. Canadian passport holders don't need a traditional visa for short-term tourism or business stays of up to 30 days. However, you must present a passport valid for at least six months, proof of an onward or return ticket, evidence of sufficient daily funds ($75 USD [approx. $107 CAD]), and a completed Belize Travel Declaration.
How can a Canadian citizen extend their stay beyond the initial 30 days?
If you want to stay longer than a month, you must apply for a Visitor's Permit Extension in person at a local Belize Immigration office before your current 30-day stamp expires. Each monthly extension grants you an additional 30 days and costs BZ$200 (approx. $142 CAD). You can repeat this process on a monthly basis.
Can Canadians legally work or run a business under a tourist entry status?
No. The initial 30-day tourist entry and all subsequent monthly Visitor's Permit Extensions strictly prohibit you from entering into any paid or unpaid employment, or engaging in local trade or business. To work legally in the country, you must formally apply for a Temporary Employment Permit through the Department of Labor.
Are Canadians required to pay a departure or exit tax when leaving Belize?
Yes. All non-Belizean citizens must pay a mandatory exit fee when departing the country. If you're flying out of the international airport, the fee is roughly $55.50 USD (approx. $79 CAD) and is almost always automatically included in your commercial airline ticket. If you exit via a land border, you must pay a $20 USD (approx. $28 CAD) exit fee in cash.
What happens if a Canadian citizen overstays their allowed time in Belize?
Overstaying your allowed 30 days or a monthly extension is a serious immigration offense. You won't be permitted to simply board an outward flight; you must visit a local immigration office to rectify your status, face formal charges, pay progressive retroactive fines, and risk potential detention or deportation.
