Visa types needed for Hungary

  • Hungary Schengen Visa (Type C)
  • ETIAS for Hungary (coming soon)*
  • Airport Transit Visa (Type A)*

Hungary Schengen Visa (Type C)

Purpose: The Hungary Schengen Visa (Type C) allows travelers to visit Hungary and other Schengen Area countries for short stays for tourism, business meetings, family visits, medical treatment, or short-term study.

When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least 3 to 4 weeks before your planned travel date.

Processing time: Processing times vary depending on nationality and consulate workload. Most applications are processed within 15 calendar days, but it can take up to 45 days in some cases.

Duration and extensions: The visa allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Extensions are granted only in exceptional circumstances.

Entries: The visa may be issued as a single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry visa, depending on your travel plans and the decision of the Hungarian consulate.

Delivery format: This is a physical visa sticker placed in your passport. You must attend an appointment and submit your passport and biometric data.

ETIAS for Hungary (coming soon)*

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a mandatory travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals visiting Hungary and other Schengen countries for tourism, business, transit, or medical purposes for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Once approved, it is generally valid for up to 3 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

We currently don’t offer this visa.*

Airport Transit Visa (Type A)*

The Hungary Airport Transit Visa (Type A) is required for certain nationalities who are transiting through the international transit area of a Hungarian airport on their way to a non-Schengen country. It only allows you to remain in the airport’s transit zone during your layover and does not permit entry into Hungary or the Schengen Area.

We currently don’t offer this visa. *

Hungary visa policy

Most foreign nationals who are not visa-exempt must obtain a visa before traveling to Hungary for tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment, or short-term study. Citizens of countries with visa-free access, including the United States, can visit Hungary for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. Once implemented, visa-exempt travelers will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization before departure.

Hungary is part of the Schengen Area and applies Schengen rules for short stays. Travelers must ensure they meet all entry conditions before departure, including holding the correct visa or travel authorization where required.

General Hungary visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure and issued within the last 10 years
  • Recent passport-size photo
  • Travel itinerary, including flight reservation and accommodation details
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay
  • Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 within the Schengen Area

FAQs

Working in Hungary generally requires a national visa or a residence permit. A Schengen Visa or ETIAS does not allow employment.

Yes. A valid Schengen Visa issued by Hungary allows travel to all Schengen countries, as long as the stay does not exceed the 90/180-day limit.

Our team works with a legal partner specializing in Schengen Visa. They will review your application to ensure its accuracy and completeness. Once the authorities approve it, you’ll receive an email with the next steps.

The “90/180-rule” means you can stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days total within any continuous 180-day window. The 180-day period is not fixed, it is counted backward from each day you are in the Schengen Area. Example:

  • You enter the Schengen Area on January 1
  • You stay for 30 days and leave on January 30
  • In the last 180 days, you’ve used 30 days
  • You still have 60 days left to use If you later return:
  • You stay 40 more days
  • Now you’ve used 70 days total
  • You only have 20 days left until the older days “drop off” the 180-day window
  • Leaving the Schengen Area “resets” nothing - only time does
A Hungary Schengen Visa (Type C) is a visa required for travelers from visa-required countries. It must be obtained through a Hungarian embassy or consulate before travel. ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is not a visa, but an online travel authorization for travelers from visa-exempt countries. Once implemented, it will be applied for online before departure and will allow short stays in Hungary and the Schengen Area. ETIAS is faster and simpler to obtain than a visa, but does not permit long-term stays or employment, and does not replace a Schengen Visa for travelers who are required to have one.
