Malawi Tourist and Business eVisa

A single- or multiple-entry eVisa valid up to 90 days total, with a maximum of 30 days per visit. Apply online and receive approval by email. You can use this visa for both tourism and business.

To apply, you’ll need:

📷 Scanned passport-style photo or selfie: We’ll guide you through the process of taking a suitable photo.
✈️ Return/onward ticket: To prove you’ll be returning home after your holiday.
🏨 Accommodation proof: Of where you’ll be staying.
💵 Proof of sufficient funds: Recent bank statements to show you can pay for your trip.

Malawi Transit Visa*

If you’re just passing through Malawi on your way to another country and need to leave the airport or stay overnight, the transit visa is the right option.

It’s valid for up to 7 days and allows one entry into the country. You’ll need to provide a confirmed onward ticket and proof of your destination.

Malawi Official, Courtesy, or Diplomatic Visa*

These visas are issued to foreign government officials, diplomats, and other guests traveling on official state business.

They are typically valid for up to three months and must be arranged through the nearest Malawi embassy or diplomatic mission.

Malawi Work and Residence Permits*

If you plan to work or live in Malawi, you’ll need a different type of visa. Employment in Malawi requires a Temporary Employment Permit (TEP), while long-term stays for investors or business owners may require a Business Residence Permit.

These permits must be arranged by your employer or local sponsor and cannot be applied for online. You’ll need to enter Malawi on a visitor visa or eVisa first, then convert your status through the Malawi Immigration Department once you're in the country.

Malawi Student Permit*

Students accepted by a recognized educational institution in Malawi must apply for a student permit. This is not something you can do through iVisa. Your school will help you initiate the application with the immigration office.

The permit covers the duration of your studies and may allow for limited work opportunities depending on your program.

Malawi visa policy

Malawi offers visa-free entry to citizens of around 80 countries, including most of the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, China, and many Southern African nations. Travelers from these countries can visit Malawi for up to 90 days without a visa. However, all other nationalities must apply for a visa in advance, most commonly the Malawi eVisa.

The eVisa can be used for tourism, business meetings, or visiting friends and family, but it does not allow you to work or study. Those purposes require separate permits. The Malawi eVisa can be single or multiple entry, and overstaying can result in fines or even deportation.

Visa extensions may be possible once in Malawi, but must be requested from the Immigration Department in person. Onward travel and proof of accommodation may be requested at the border. A Yellow Fever certificate is also required if you’re arriving from a country where Yellow Fever is endemic.

The visa application system has been modernized in recent years, and the eVisa platform is the preferred method for short visits. Work and study permits must still go through the traditional immigration process.

How long is my Malawi eVisa valid for?

The Malawi Tourist eVisa is valid for 90 days after the issue date, you must enter the country within this period. Once you enter the country, you can stay for up to 30 days.

How far in advance should I apply for the Malawi eVisa?

While official processing time is up to 3 working days, we recommend applying at least one month before your trip to accommodate occasional delays. Holiday seasons may push timelines even further, so plan ahead.

When does the Malawi eVisa validity begin?

The validity period starts on the date of issue, not your planned travel date. This means if you're approved early, your visa could expire before your trip. Always schedule your application, so your travel window falls within the visa validity of 90 days.

Can a Malawi Transit eVisa let me leave the airport?

Yes, transit visas allow you one entry and up to 7 days in Malawi, including exiting the airport. If you're staying in the international transfer area for under 24 hours, a transit visa isn't required unless you must clear immigration.

How do I apply for a Malawi eVisa?

You can apply for your eVisa through iVisa (or download our mobile app).

For other visas, you’ll need to complete the application process on the government platform, pay the visa fee, and in some cases, schedule an interview at a Malawi embassy or consulate.

Supporting documents like your passport, photo, and purpose of travel are required.

Is the Malawi eVisa extendable if I want to stay longer than 30 days?

Yes, you can apply for extensions at the Malawi Immigration offices (Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba). Travelers report extension fees around MK 5,000 (~USD 5–10/month), but approval is not guaranteed.

What happens if I overstay my Malawi eVisa?

Overstaying can result in daily fines (~USD 25) and potential deportation. The overstay penalty must be paid before exiting Malawi.

Do I need health documents to enter Malawi, like Yellow Fever?

If you're coming from or transiting in a Yellow Fever–endemic country, a valid vaccine certificate is mandated upon arrival in Malawi.

This is also the case when arriving overland from Zimbabwe, for example if you want to visit the other side of the popular Victoria Falls.
