Austria Golden Visa: Requirements and the Real Routes

Key points

  • Austria has no fixed golden visa scheme; citizenship for extraordinary contribution is granted case by case.
  • Because the grant serves the national interest, applicants are usually allowed to keep their existing nationality.
  • There is no statutory minimum investment; what counts is a contribution the government judges extraordinary, and that creates real jobs.
  • Only a few dozen extraordinary-contribution naturalisations are granted each year, across every field.
  • Fees include federal citizenship charges plus roughly 8-10% in administrative and legal costs.

What is the Austria Golden Visa?

Austria is one of Europe’s most prosperous nations and offers residents a very high standard of living. Strictly speaking, Austria has no “golden visa” in the usual sense: there is no published scheme that trades a set investment for a passport.

What exists instead are two separate things. Residence permits — such as the settlement permit for self-employed key workers — follow the ordinary immigration rules and quotas. Separately, section 10(6) of the Citizenship Act lets the federal government naturalise someone who has already made, and is expected to keep making, an extraordinary contribution to Austria in areas like business, science, the arts, or sport. That decision is discretionary and requires Council of Ministers approval; the process usually spans one to three years.

Benefits often associated with Austrian residence permits include:

  • Travel to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • High-quality education and healthcare
  • The ability to include family members

Eligibility Criteria

There is no published quota for extraordinary-contribution citizenship, and in practice only a few dozen such naturalisations are granted a year across every field. Because the grant is made in the special interest of the Republic, applicants are generally permitted to keep their existing nationality — the renunciation rule that applies to ordinary naturalisation is waived here.

The residence-permit routes are the ones with codified requirements. Those generally include:

  • Being 18 or older
  • A clean criminal background
  • Establishing Austrian residence
  • Maintaining minimum liquid assets of EUR 40,000
  • Purchasing or renting permanent residential property
  • Holding private medical insurance
  • Reaching A1-level German proficiency

Family inclusion: spouses and dependent children under 21 may be included.

What kind of contribution counts

There is no menu of qualifying investments, because this is not a priced programme. Buying bonds or real estate does not count. The contributions that have supported a section 10(6) case are active and job-creating, for example:

  • Significant government fund contributions
  • Joint venture investments
  • Venture capital investments
  • Innovative or priority-business investments

There is no statutory minimum, because this is a merit assessment rather than a priced programme — no published figure buys a decision. Whatever its size, the contribution is expected to:

  • Grant the principal applicant organizational influence
  • Demonstrate strong economic performance
  • Create substantial full-time employment
  • Support Austria’s economic relations

Application Process

The application involves multi-level government approval, generally over one to three years, and ends with a Council of Ministers decision. Approval is never guaranteed, however large the contribution.

Documentation commonly requested includes:

  • Three years of income verification
  • Police clearance certificates
  • A current Austrian visa
  • A valid passport
  • Educational credentials
  • Family documentation such as marriage and birth certificates
  • Complete CVs for all family members
  • Recent passport photographs

Costs: beyond the investment itself, applicants should plan for roughly 8-10% extra to cover administrative, legal, and consultation fees. Government federal citizenship fees are EUR 700 (EUR 1,400 for couples), plus provincial charges. These are government fees and are separate from any service fee charged by a private provider.

What approval actually gives you

One notable point is that citizenship can follow directly from approval, without the long qualifying residence that ordinary naturalisation requires. An Austrian passport enables visa-free access to a wide range of destinations.

Approval remains discretionary. Citizenship is granted at the sole discretion of the Austrian government, so meeting the criteria does not guarantee acceptance.

Alternative Options

If you are considering Austrian residency, you might first explore a Schengen visa or an ETIAS waiver for exploratory visits before committing to anything larger.

This article is general guidance, not legal advice. Investor citizenship and residency rules change and are handled by Austrian authorities, so confirm current requirements with official government sources before you apply.
