Frequently Asked Questions
Learn more about Denmark Tourism
Denmark is one of the most famous Scandinavian countries. It’s located on the Jutland peninsula and has a connection to Sweden, the Öresund Bridge. Copenhagen, its capital, has many royal palaces and the colorful port of Nyhavn. This city also has the Tivoli amusement park and the iconic statue of "The Little Mermaid". In Denmark, you can also visit Odense, the birthplace of writer Hans Christian Andersen, which has a medieval center full of cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses.
The Tívole gardens are amusement parks with a wide variety of games and recreational activities for all the public. These parks were opened on August 15, 1843, making them Denmark's second oldest amusement park, after Dyrehavsakken. Since then, it has been a great success both among its inhabitants and among curious tourists. As you will notice, due to its oldness, it’s famous not only for children but for adults.
In Copenhagen, you must visit Nyhavn, a 17th-century promenade, canal, and entertainment area. This construction spans from Kongens Nytorv to the port, just south of the Royal Theater. It has what is known as brightly colored petit hôtels from the 17th and early 18th centuries, and it also has a host of bars, cafes, and restaurants. Being something so characteristic of Denmark, it serves as a "heritage port" full of welcoming and eye-catching wooden boats for anyone.
As you know, The Little Mermaid is a tale of Danish origin, and that’s why it has so much recognition in the country. So much so, that they made a statue in its honor. This sculpture is made of bronze and was elaborated by sculptor Edvard Eriksen. You can see it on the promenade of the Langelinie coast, in the famous bay of the Port of Copenhagen, which empties into the Baltic Sea. Also, this location is close to the Amalienborg Royal Palace. If there’s something that stands out about the statue of The Little Mermaid, it is that it was precisely placed on some rocks, making it an emblematic symbol of the city.
Castles and classical buildings are a matchless point in Denmark. That’s why one point that you cannot forget is Amalienborg Palace. This palace is the residence of the Danish royal family in Copenhagen. It’s made up of four Rococo-style buildings, designed by the architect Nicolai Eigtved between 1750 and 1768. They became a royal residence in 1794 when a fire destroyed the old Royal Palace in Copenhagen. You should know that the Danish Royal Family uses it as a winter residence.
Another palace you can visit in Copenhagen is the Rosenborg Palace. This castle was originally built in 1606 as a country house for the monarch's summer use and it serves as an example of the multiple architectural projects that the King of Denmark Christian IV had in mind. It has a Dutch Renaissance style, the typical style in which the Danish buildings of the time were made. It underwent various reconstructions, culminating in its current form in 1624.
If you are interested in delving further into the history and art of Denmark, you can visit Voergaard Slot. This is a Renaissance manor house located 10 km north of Dronninglund, on the north peninsula of Jutland, in northwest Denmark. It houses an important art collection that reflects this aspect of the country very well.
By the way, you’ll be interested to know that Jutland is one of the largest regions in Denmark and that unlike Copenhagen, it’s much more isolated and peaceful. As an interesting fact, its name comes from the Germanic tribe of the Jutes. When the Vikings invaded lands, both tribes mixed and from there the Danish people arose. That is why Viking culture is so important in this country and you can visit vestiges of it in different museums both in Jutland and in other important cities, including Copenhagen.
To visit other more familiar but at the same time interesting points, you can visit the Copenhagen Zoo or the Roskilde Museum. It should be noted that the Roskilde Museum has a famous Sugar House with a lot of historical value and that if you go into the museum, you will see fossils and skeletons of extinct species that were important in the region.
Art, history, and culture are unforgettable aspects of Denmark, and you can explore them in greater depth in places like The National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. This is known as the largest Danish museum of cultural history. Although its collection focuses on the history of Denmark and the Danish people, it also offers collections from various parts of the world. As an interesting fact about this place, it was part of the Prince's Palace once. It served as the residence of the then Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark, next to the Frederiksholm canal, in the center of the city.
The nature you can witness in Denmark quickly takes your breath away. Especially with examples like Thy National Park. The landscape in this place offers windy coasts and dune systems, and it also has a lot of meadows or plantations. You can explore a lot of interesting spots in this park, including some remains from the Stone Age Littorina Sea. You can also visit the Geocenter Møns Klint, a geological museum on the famous island of Møn, which is located near the top of the chalk cliffs known as Møns Klint. In this place, you can learn not only about the history and geology of Denmark but also appreciate its beauty in all its splendor.
As you will notice, Denmark is a country very attached to its past and its maritime culture, something notorious in several tourist spots related to coastal lighthouses. An example of this is the Bovbjerg Lighthouse, a colorful and eye-catching construction for any tourist, or the Skagen Lighthouse lighthouse, also known as the Skagen Gray Lighthouse, which is located in the extreme north of Jutland.
These are just some interesting points to visit in Denmark because there are more. Remember that this country has a long history, and that’s why you cannot choose just one thing to do. Just remember that before planning a trip to this place, you should get your list of travel documents first. As you might know, the passport is a must, but keep in mind that you might require other documents like the Danish Health Declaration.
The Health Declaration is an important requirement that avoids any inconvenience at the airport, especially if there’s an emergency, including global pandemics and natural disasters. You should apply for it if you want to visit Denmark and other important European countries.
Remember that you can use iVisa.com’s website to verify all the travel requirements needed to enter Denmark, including the Health Declaration and eVisas.
