Thai tourists will keep visa-free access to Japan for at least another year. Thailand's Department of Consular Affairs confirmed on July 8, 2026, that Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has renewed its temporary visa exemption for holders of Thai ordinary passports, covering the period from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027, with stays of up to 15 days per visit, according to The Nation Thailand.
Before this renewal, the arrangement was set to expire on June 30, 2026. Had Japan not extended it, Thai tourists would have been required to apply for a visa at the Embassy of Japan in Bangkok or the Consulate-General in Chiang Mai before every trip. Now, eligible travelers can continue entering Japan by simply presenting their passport at immigration and receiving a 15-day stamp on arrival.
The exemption has been running on an annual renewal cycle since it was first introduced on July 1, 2013, making this the 13th consecutive year Japan has kept the door open for Thai visitors.
Do I qualify for visa-free entry to Japan as a Thai citizen?
If you hold a Thai ordinary passport with an ICAO-compliant biometric ePassport chip, you can enter Japan without a visa for tourism stays of up to 15 days. You can confirm your passport qualifies by checking for the ePassport symbol on the front cover.
If your Thai passport does not have the biometric chip, you are not eligible for the visa-free arrangement and must apply for a Japanese visa in advance. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is explicit on this point: non-ePassport holders will be refused entry if they arrive without a visa.
The exemption covers tourism only. It does not permit employment, long-term study, or any activity that generates income inside Japan. Travelers must also carry evidence of onward or return travel, sufficient funds, and confirmed accommodation.
Thailand's Department of Consular Affairs reminded travelers to stick to the conditions of entry, leave before their 15 days are up, and not take on any unauthorized work.
Can I stay longer than 15 days in Japan on this exemption?
If you are traveling on the 15-day visa-free arrangement, you cannot extend your stay beyond that window under any circumstances. The cap is fixed, and there is no mechanism to add extra days once you are in the country.
If you need more time in Japan, you must apply for a tourist visa through the Embassy of Japan in Bangkok or the Consulate-General in Chiang Mai before traveling. Thailand is not on Japan's eVISA list, so the only route for stays beyond 15 days is the traditional paper visa process.
How important is Thailand as a source of visitors for Japan?
Thailand is Japan's sixth-largest source of international visitors overall and its biggest tourism market in Southeast Asia, with 557,800 Thai visitors arriving in the first four months of 2026 alone, a 7.2% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
That steady growth helps explain why Tokyo has continued renewing the exemption year after year despite its broader push to tighten immigration controls under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government.
What about Taiwan's visa-free arrangement for Thai travelers?
While Japan's renewal is confirmed, Taiwan's equivalent arrangement is still up in the air. The current Taiwanese visa exemption for Thai passport holders allows stays of up to 14 days per visit and has been running from August 1, 2025, to July 31, 2026. That expiry date is now less than three weeks away, and no announcement on a renewal has been made.
Thai travelers planning trips to Taiwan should keep a close eye on updates from Taiwan's authorities before booking.
