Portuguese visa policy for American citizens

US citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Portugal for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, US travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Portugal or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

US citizens will need one Portuguese entry document:

  • ETIAS for Portugal: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow US citizens to enter Portugal for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Portugal entry requirements for US travelers are:

  • USA passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Portugal visa with a United States passport

US citizens do not need a visa for Portugal for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, starting in late 2026, you will be required to obtain an ETIAS authorization before travel. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for Portugal online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

US nationals can stay in Portugal for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa for tourism or business. This is a rolling limit shared across the entire Schengen Area. To stay longer, you must apply for a residency visa (like the D7 or Digital Nomad visa) or a temporary stay visa before your travel.

US citizens do not need a transit visa for Portugal, whether transiting airside or landside. However, starting in late 2026, an ETIAS authorization will be required for all transit purposes. Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your departure from the Schengen Area.

US nationals generally cannot extend a 90-day visa-free stay unless an emergency (e.g., medical or force majeure) occurs. For planned longer stays, you must apply for a residency or temporary stay visa via a Portuguese consulate before traveling, as in-country status adjustments are typically not permitted.
