Portuguese visa policy for Israeli citizens

Israeli citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Portugal for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, Israeli travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Portugal or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

Israelis will need one Portuguese entry document:

ETIAS for Portugal: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow Israeli citizens to enter Portugal for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Portugal entry requirements for Israeli travelers are:

  • Israel passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Portugal visa with a Israel passport

Israeli citizens do not need a visa for Portugal for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business. However, starting in late 2026, you will be required to obtain an ETIAS authorization before your trip. For stays exceeding 90 days or for work purposes, a national residency or temporary stay visa is required.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for Portugal online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

Israeli nationals can stay in Portugal for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa for tourism, business, or family visits. This limit applies across the entire Schengen Area collectively. For stays exceeding 90 days, you must apply for a national residency or temporary stay visa before traveling. Additionally, starting in late 2026, an ETIAS authorization will be required for entry.

Israeli citizens do not need a transit visa for Portugal, whether transiting airside or landside. However, starting in late 2026, a valid ETIAS authorization will be required for any transit through the Schengen Area. Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your departure date.

Israeli nationals can typically extend a 90-day visa-free stay by applying at an AIMA office within Portugal. Extensions are generally granted for an additional 90 days for justified reasons like medical emergencies or travel disruptions. You must apply before your initial allowance expires and pay a processing fee.
