Sint Maartener visa policy for Canadian citizens

Canadian citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Sint Maarten for short stays of up to 90 days (three months) for tourism or business. They are limited to an initial 90-day period, which can be extended to a maximum of 180 days through a formal application at the local immigration office. Canadian travelers need one Sint Maarten entry document: Sint Maarten ED Card: A mandatory online immigration form (Embarkation-Disembarkation Card) that must be completed before arrival. It replaced the paper-based system in late 2024 and is required for all visitors to receive the digital QR code necessary for immigration clearance at Princess Juliana International Airport. General Sint Maarten entry requirements for Canadian travelers are: Canadian passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date; Confirmed return or onward flight ticket; Evidence of sufficient financial means for the duration of the stay; Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or residential address); Health insurance valid for the duration of the stay (mandatory if applying for an extension beyond 90 days); Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation (e.g., business contact details or conference invitation).

Frequently asked questions about getting the Sint Maarten visa with a Canada passport

Canadian citizens are permitted to stay for up to 90 days (three months) within a 180-day period without a visa. This stay is for tourism or business purposes only. If you intend to stay longer, you must apply for a formal extension of stay once you're on the island.

Yes. Every Canadian traveler, including children and infants, must complete the Digital ED Card before arrival. You should complete this form as soon as you have your flight and accommodation details. Once submitted, you'll receive a digital QR code that must be presented to immigration officers at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) to clear the border.

Yes. Canadian citizens can apply to extend their stay for a total maximum of 180 days per year. You must submit your application at the Immigration and Border Protection (IBP) office in Philipsburg before your first 90 days expire. To be approved, you must provide proof of valid health insurance that covers the entire duration of your extended stay, a return ticket, and evidence of sufficient funds.

Technically, your visa-free entry is for non-remunerative purposes only. While work is generally interpreted as working for a local Sint Maarten employer, there's no official digital nomad visa for the Dutch side. If you're staying for a short vacation while answering emails, it's rarely an issue; however, if you plan to reside on the island for several months specifically to work remotely, you may be required to apply for a residence permit to remain in legal standing.

Overstaying is a violation of Sint Maarten’s immigration laws. If you exceed your 90-day limit (or your approved extension) without a valid residence permit, you may face fines, deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Dutch Caribbean territories. Immigration records are digitized, and overstays are flagged automatically upon departure.
