Tanzania visa requirements

Whether you need a visa for Tanzania depends on your nationality and the purpose of your trip. iVisa offers two Tanzania travel documents: the Tanzania Tourist eVisa, for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or transit, and the Tanzania Business eVisa, for travelers entering to carry out short-term professional assignments. Both are electronic visas linked to your passport, so there's no embassy visit or passport label required.

Start your application and iVisa will confirm exactly which Tanzania travel document you need based on your nationality and trip, then prepare, review, and file it for you.

General Tanzania visa requirements are:

Requirements verified against official government sources

  • Valid passport (valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival)
  • A recent passport-style photograph
  • Return or onward flight ticket details
  • Accommodation details (hotel name or an invitation letter)
  • Valid email address

Apply now
Who it's for
The Tanzania Tourist eVisa is for international travelers entering Tanzania for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or transit.
Zanzibar coverage
The Tanzania eVisa covers both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Travelers visiting Zanzibar must separately arrange mandatory travel insurance via the official Zanzibar portal, which is a requirement separate from the visa.
Ports of entry
The eVisa is valid at designated air, land, and sea ports, including Julius Nyerere (DAR), Kilimanjaro (JRO), Abeid Amani Karume (ZNZ), and Mwanza (MWZ) airports. Entry through remote border stations may require a physical visa obtained at an embassy.
Health requirements
If you are arriving from or have transited for more than 12 hours through a country with a risk of yellow fever, you must present an International Certificate of Vaccination upon arrival.
Delivery format
Once approved, you receive your eVisa by email as a PDF. We recommend printing a physical copy for your airline and immigration officers, and keeping a digital backup on your phone.

  • I had read stories from people who had waited months for a Visa and from people who had never heard back, I received mine the next day.

  • Very straight forward application, fast service good communication! A little more money but worth it!
    Gail DeGoughSeptember 18, 2026
  • Once the application was submitted the process went quite smoothly. What wasn't so good was the tight parameters around providing satisfactory ID. Files could only be a certain type, size, age, type of picture, etc making it difficult to comply.

  • Very impressed with the ease, communication and speed of this process. Unexpected and much appreciated.

  • The application process was easy and visa granted in a timely fashion. If there was 1 draw back it would be the price (on the high side).

Tanzania visa FAQs

What travelers commonly ask about Tanzania visas.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

What is the difference between a Tanzania Tourist (Ordinary) Visa and a Business Visa?

An Ordinary Visa is strictly for leisure, holidays, and visiting family. If you're entering to perform short-term professional tasks—such as auditing accounts, repairing machines, or conducting short-term training—you legally must obtain a Business Visa. Performing professional work on a tourist visa violates immigration laws.

Is the Tanzania eVisa valid for Zanzibar?

Yes. The Tanzania eVisa covers both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. However, travelers visiting Zanzibar must now pay for mandatory travel insurance for 92 days' cover, via the official Zanzibar portal. This is a separate requirement from the visa.

Which ports of entry accept the Tanzania eVisa?

The Tanzania eVisa is only valid for entry at designated ports: Air: Julius Nyerere (DAR), Kilimanjaro (JRO), Abeid Amani Karume (ZNZ), and Mwanza (MWZ). Land: Namanga, Sirari, Horohoro, Mutukula, Rusumo, Tunduma, and Kasumulu. Sea: Dar es Salaam Port and Zanzibar Port. Entry through remote border stations may require a physical visa obtained at an embassy.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate for a Tanzania visa?

If you are arriving from or have transited (for more than 12 hours) through a country with a risk of yellow fever (e.g., Kenya, Ethiopia, or Uganda), you must present an International Certificate of Vaccination upon arrival.

Do children/minors need their own Tanzania eVisa?

Yes. Every traveler, including infants, must have an individual eVisa. Parents can manage these applications easily through iVisa using the "Add another person" feature.

Can I extend my Tanzania Tourist eVisa?

Yes. A standard single-entry visa can often be extended for an additional 90 days (totaling 180 days) at a Regional Immigration Office within Tanzania. This must be done in person before your original 90 days expire.

What happens if my Tanzania visa application is denied?

Denials are often due to blurry passport photos or typos. If your application is rejected, you can usually re-apply with corrected info. iVisa offers denial protection to help cover costs if your application is not approved.
