Tanzanian visa policy for American citizens

US citizens need a visa to travel to Tanzania. The most common option is the Tanzanian eVisa, which must be obtained before departure. Tanzania does not offer visa-free entry for US passport holders.

iVisa offers two Tanzanian entry documents for US travelers:

  • Tanzania Tourist eVisa: an electronic visa required for US citizens that allows a single entry into Tanzania for up to 90 days, valid for both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

  • Tanzania Business eVisa: an electronic visa required for US citizens that allows a single entry into Tanzania for up to 90 days, valid for business travel.

General Tanzania visa requirements for US travelers are:

  • US passport valid for at least six months
  • Passport-style photograph
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Evidence of sufficient funds
  • Supporting documents, depending on purpose or situation

iVisa can process the Tanzanian eVisa for US citizens in as little as 8 business days.

Rules can change and can differ by the purpose of travel (tourism/business/work/study). Always confirm with the destination’s official immigration/consular source before booking.

For US citizens, each stay in Tanzania is limited to a maximum of **90 days (three months) per visit.

US citizens traveling directly from the United States do not need a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Tanzania. However, if you transit through a yellow fever-endemic country (such as Kenya, Ethiopia, or Uganda) for 12 hours or more, or if you leave the airport during your layover, you are legally required to show proof of vaccination upon arrival.

For any transactions where USD is still accepted (such as visa fees or high-end safari tips), your US dollar bills must be printed after 2006 and must be in pristine condition. Tanzanian banks and vendors will routinely reject bills that are torn, heavily creased, or have any ink marks or stamps.

US travelers must have at least two entirely blank visa pages in their passports to enter Tanzania. These pages must be side-by-side (facing each other) to accommodate the entry and exit stamps, as well as the physical visa sticker if you are not using an eVisa.

Yes, proof of onward or return travel is a mandatory entry requirement for all US citizens visiting Tanzania on a tourist visa. You must be able to show a confirmed flight reservation leaving Tanzania before your 90-day stay expires.
