Egyptian visa policy for American citizens

US citizens need a visa to visit Egypt, and the most common option is the Egypt eVisa for tourism and business, which must be obtained before departure. Egypt also provides a Visa on Arrival option for US citizens at selected ports of entry. However, applying for the eVisa in advance is more convenient and helps avoid delays at the airport.

iVisa offers one entry document for US travelers:

  • Egypt eVisa: A mandatory electronic visa that allows US citizens to enter Egypt for tourism or business. Single-entry eVisas are valid for 90 days from issuance and allow stays of up to 30 days. Multiple-entry eVisas are valid for 180 days from issuance and also allow stays of up to 30 days per visit.

General Egypt visa requirements for US travelers are:

  • A United States passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay
  • Photo
  • Confirmed onward or return travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation and travel itinerary
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay

FAQs

Yes. United States citizens need a visa to enter Egypt for tourism. Most US travelers can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Egyptian airports or apply for an Egyptian eVisa online before traveling.

If using the Visa on Arrival, there is no pre-travel processing time, as it is issued upon arrival at the airport. If applying for an Egyptian eVisa in advance, processing is typically around 3–7 business days.

With an Egyptian tourist visa (Visa on Arrival of eVisa), US citizens are typically allowed to stay up to 30 days per visit.

Egyptian immigration authorities may require US travelers to demonstrate intent to leave Egypt before their visa expires. While a return ticket is not always mandatory, travelers should be prepared to show proof of onward or return travel of sufficient funds to purchase a departure ticket.

No. The Egypt eVisa is issued electronically. US travelers receive the approved visa by email and must print a copy to present to airline staff and Egyptian immigration authorities upon arrival.

US citizens arriving directly at Sharm El Sheikh may receive a free Sinai-only entry stamp on arrival. This stamp:

  • Is valid for up to 15 days

  • Allows travel only within the Sinai Peninsula (e.g., Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba)

  • Does not permit travel to the rest of Egypt

If you plan to stay in the Sinai region longer than 15 days, you must obtain a regular Egypt visa or an eVisa before or upon arrival.
