Visa types needed for Colombia

  • Visitor Visa (Type V)*
  • Migrant Visa (Type M)*
  • Resident Visa (Type R)*

Visitor Visa (Type V)*

The Visitor Visa is for travelers from visa-required countries or those visiting Colombia for tourism, digital nomad work, medical treatment, volunteering, or business.

This visa is typically valid for 90 days per entry, and in some cases, can be issued for up to two years depending on your purpose of travel.

*Unfortunately, we currently don’t offer the Visitor Visa.

Migrant Visa (Type M)*

The Migrant Visa is ideal for foreigners who plan to live in Colombia for an extended period. It includes several categories such as marriage to a Colombian national, employment, investment, study, or retirement.

This visa is usually valid for up to three years and allows multiple entries and exits.

*Unfortunately, we currently don’t offer the Migrant Visa.

Resident Visa (Type R)*

The Resident Visa is for foreigners looking to settle in Colombia permanently. It is commonly issued to those who have held a Migrant Visa for five years, have Colombian children, or were previously Colombian citizens.

This visa allows for indefinite stay and provides a path to full residency rights.

*Unfortunately, we currently don’t offer the Resident Visa.

Colombia visa policy

Colombia’s visa policy depends on your nationality, the purpose of your visit, and how long you plan to stay. Citizens from over 100 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, most EU nations, Canada, Australia, and Japan, can enter Colombia for up to 90 days without a visa.

Travelers from visa-required countries must apply for a Visitor Visa (Type V), which covers purposes such as tourism, digital nomad work, volunteering, medical treatment, and business.

Some visas may be valid for up to two years, with a maximum stay of 180 days per year. For longer stays, Colombia offers Migrant Visas (Type M) for work, study, marriage, investment, retirement, or refugee status, usually valid for up to three years.

Those seeking permanent residency can apply for a Resident Visa (Type R) after holding a Migrant Visa for five years or through family ties or former citizenship. All air travelers must complete the Check-MIG Form before arrival and departure.

FAQs

The Check-MIG Form is valid for a single entry. You must complete it each time you enter or leave Colombia by air.

Citizens of visa-exempt countries can stay in Colombia for up to 90 days. You can apply for a one-time extension to stay a total of 180 days per calendar year.

You can apply for the Check-MIG Form through iVisa. For other Colombian visas, you can visit the government website.

The Visitor Visa (Type V) is for short-term stays, such as tourism, business, volunteering, or studying. The Migrant Visa (Type M) is for those planning to live in Colombia longer, such as for work, marriage, or retirement.

Not with a standard tourist visa. You’ll need a visa category that allows employment, like a Migrant Work Visa or a Digital Nomad Visa.

If you entered with a visa-exempt passport, you can request an extension up to 180 days per year. For visa holders, extension rules depend on your visa type.

Overstaying may result in fines and could impact your ability to re-enter the country. It's best to apply for an extension in advance if needed.

Just your passport, travel details (such as airline and accommodation), and a valid email address. The process is quick and can be done online.

Our team will review your details, submit the form to the Colombian authorities, and email your confirmation QR code when ready. In the meantime, download the iVisa app to access your travel documents while you're on the go.
