Why do Canadian citizens have to pay a reciprocity fee if they're visa-exempt?
While Canadians don't need a formal tourist visa for stays under 90 days, the Colombian government imposes a mandatory reciprocity fee of COP 270,000 (approx. $90 CAD). This fee matches the processing costs that Canada charges Colombian nationals for visas. It can be paid online beforehand or via credit card at the immigration counters upon arrival.
Can Canadians extend their 90-day visa-exempt stay while inside Colombia?
Yes. If you want to stay longer than the initial 90 days granted at the border, you can apply for a tourist stay extension online through the Migración Colombia portal. This allows you to extend your stay for an additional 90 days, up to a absolute maximum of 180 days per calendar year as a visitor. You should submit the request at least five days before your initial entry stamp expires.
Is the Check-MIG Form an entry visa?
No. The Check-MIG Form is a border-control travel registration, not a visa. Migración Colombia does not classify it as obligatory, but travelers commonly file it online within the 72-hour window before flights to or from Colombia so their details are already in the system on arrival.
Who is exempt from paying the Canadian reciprocity fee?
The reciprocity fee is waived for Canadian citizens who are under 14 years old or over 79 years old. It also doesn't apply to transit passengers who don't clear immigration, travelers holding a valid pre-arranged Colombian visa, or those flying directly to the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina. Dual Canadian-Colombian citizens entering on a Colombian passport are also exempt.
What happens if a Canadian citizen overstays their tourist entry limit?
Overstaying your allowed 90 or 180 days is an immigration violation. You won't be permitted to clear airport security or board your outward flight until your status is resolved. You'll need to visit a Migración Colombia office, pay a progressive financial fine, and secure a formal Salvoconducto (Safe-Conduct) exit document to leave the country legally.
