Digital nomads usually look for destinations where they can slow down the rhythm, enjoy beautiful places, and have a reliable internet connection to work. Costa Rica can offer all that and an easy digital nomad visa to apply for online.

The country has high degrees of connectivity, shared workspaces, and even entire residential communities of remote workers. You can live this experience by following some steps of the application process and meeting a few requirements.

In this article, you will learn about the legal stay documents for digital nomad visas (DNV), the requirements of the Foreign Nationals Administration, and everything you need to work remotely from Costa Rica.

What is the Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa (DNV)?

The remote work advantage is that you can take personal computer equipment and work from anywhere with average internet speed. This allows digital nomads to live in different countries, learn another culture and try a lifestyle change. Costa Rica is one of the options to live this fantastic experience: the government developed a special visa for remote workers, business owners, and freelancers who want to stay in a foreign country longer than a tourist visa.

The Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa allows a long stay if you can prove you work for a foreign company, own a business, or work as a freelancer with clients from other companies. It's essential to have a steady income to prove you have enough funds for your stay. Be aware that this is not a Costa Rica Work Visa, so you cannot work in a Costa Rican company during your stay.

The Costa Rican government created this visa to boost tourism and take advantage of the remote work trend. The foreign national is exempt from income tax with this visa and can enjoy all Costa Rica offers like a tourist but stay a year in the country. Digital nomads can move to Costa Rica with a family member since they submit all required documents to prove their relationship.

Get to know all the documents you need below and be ready to live in this country in Central America.

Who can apply for a Digital Nomad Visa?

No matter your home country, all remote workers can apply if they meet the requirements and submit a few supporting documents. The most important requirement to be eligible is to work remotely or as a freelancer for a company out of Costa Rica.

When will Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa be available?

Are you ready to enjoy the nomadic lifestyle? The Costa Rica DNV is already available. Costa Rica announced this visa in October 2021, and after months of waiting, it was legalized. The country started processing the Digital Nomad Visa in July 2022.

How long is the Digital Nomad Visa valid to visit Costa Rica?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs allows digital nomad visa holders to stay in the country for 12 months. After this period, it is possible to apply for another 12 months. It's a long-stay visa, so you can experience leaving your home country and living in another culture, maybe even learning a foreign language.
