Maldives Traveler Declaration Form

A mandatory health-and-arrival form for all passengers (tourists, residents, crew, diplomats). It’s for one-off use – must be resubmitted for every trip. It must be submitted within 96 hours before arrival.

To complete the form, you’ll need:

🛂 Your passport: Must have at least 1 month validity on arrival (6 months recommended).
✈️ Flight & accommodation details: Details of your planned trip.
📄 Proof of onward/return ticket or sponsorship: To show you’ll return home after your trip.

Maldives Tourist Visa (Visa on Arrival)*

Most travelers can enter the Maldives without applying for a visa in advance. Instead, you’ll get a free 30-day tourist visa when you arrive. To qualify, you’ll need a passport valid for at least one month, a confirmed hotel booking or host information, proof of enough funds for your stay, and a return or onward ticket.

You can also extend your visa once while in the Maldives for up to 60 days total, by visiting the immigration office in Malé.

Maldives Business Visa*

If you're visiting for work-related purposes, like attending a training, managing a short-term project, or holding business meetings, you’ll need a Maldives Business Visa.

It’s typically valid for up to 90 days and allows multiple entries. Your local business contact or sponsor in the Maldives must apply for the visa on your behalf before you travel. Once approved, you’ll receive the visa on arrival.

Maldives Work Visa*

Planning to live and work in the Maldives? You’ll need a Work Visa, which is issued after you receive an Employment Approval (EA) from Maldives Immigration.

Your employer will take care of this process and must apply for the EA before you arrive. Once approved, you’ll be granted a visa that usually matches the length of your work contract, up to one year, and it can be renewed if you keep working under valid sponsorship.

Maldives Marriage Visa*

If you're legally married to a Maldivian citizen, you may be eligible for a Marriage Visa. This visa is initially issued for one year and can be extended for up to five years as long as the marriage remains legally valid.

You’ll need to submit a copy of your marriage certificate and be sponsored by your Maldivian spouse. This visa gives you permission to stay long-term but doesn’t automatically grant work rights.

If you’re both foreign citizens, and you’d like to get married in the Maldives, it’s important to know you can’t legally get married there. However, you are allowed to do a symbolic wedding or vow renewal on a tourist visa (visa on arrival).

Maldives Resident Visa*

This long-term visa is aimed at foreign investors or high-net-worth individuals who want to live in the Maldives.

You can qualify by meeting one of several investment conditions, such as investing $1 million or more in approved real estate, maintaining $1 million in a local bank for two years, or investing $50 million+ in major projects.

If approved, you and your family members (spouse and minor children) can stay in the Maldives for up to five years, with the option to renew.

Maldives Meeting Visa*

Attending a conference, seminar, or official event? You might need a Meeting Visa, especially if your activities go beyond regular tourism. This visa is valid for up to 14 days and can’t be extended.

The host or organizing institution in the Maldives must apply for this visa in advance and provide a letter of invitation. It’s great for short, formal stays related to professional or government events.

Maldives Work Visa H-1B1*

The H-1B visa is designed for skilled professionals who have a job offer from a Maldives employer in a specialized field, like tech, engineering, science, or finance. To qualify, you typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in the relevant field.

It's one of the most popular work visas, but it’s also competitive due to an annual cap. If approved, the visa allows you to live and work in the Maldives for up to three years, with the possibility of an extension.

Maldives visitors are issued a free 30-day Tourist Visa on arrival, as long as they meet basic entry requirements. These include a passport valid for at least one month from the date of entry (though six months is recommended), proof of onward or return travel, a confirmed hotel booking or local host information, and evidence of sufficient funds to support the stay (usually around USD 100 + USD 50 per day).

Travelers entering for reasons other than tourism, such as employment, business, family reunification, or conferences, must have the appropriate visa before arrival. These visas include the Work Visa, Business Visa, Meeting Visa, Marriage Visa, and Dependent Visa, each of which requires local sponsorship. Applications must be submitted in advance by an approved employer, family member, or event organizer in the Maldives.

For long-term stays, the government offers a Resident (Corporate Residence) Visa for eligible foreign investors and their families. This visa is granted for up to five years and is renewable, with conditions such as holding $1 million in a Maldivian bank or investing in qualified real estate or development projects.

One key requirement for all travelers, regardless of nationality or visa type, is the Maldives Traveler Declaration (Traveler Declaration). This mandatory form must be submitted online within 96 hours before your arrival in the country. It includes basic health and travel details and must be completed even if you are only visiting briefly or transiting.

How long does it take to get a Maldives Traveler Declaration?

The form is reviewed by Maldives Immigration almost instantly in most cases, but you should submit it at least a few hours before your flight in case of delays.

How long can I stay in the Maldives on a tourist visa?

You can stay in the Maldives on a tourist visa for an initial period of 30 days, which is granted upon arrival for free. This initial stay can be extended for up to an additional 60 days, for a total of 90 days, by applying to the Maldives Department of Immigration before the original visa expires.

How do I apply for a Maldives Traveler Declaration?

You can apply for your Traveler Declaration through the government or iVisa (or download our mobile app).

Tourist visa is granted on arrival to the Maldives. As such, a foreigner traveling to Maldives as a tourist does not require pre-approval for the visa.

Can I work in the Maldives on a Tourist Visa or Traveller Declaration?

No, working in the Maldives is not allowed on a Tourist Visa or based on the Traveler Declaration. If you plan to work, even short-term or freelance, you must have a Work Visa linked to an approved Employment Approval (EA). Working without the right visa can lead to fines, detention, or deportation.

Can I extend my stay in the Maldives?

Yes, if you’re on a Tourist Visa and want to stay longer, you can apply for an extension at the Maldives Immigration office. The maximum total stay is 60 days (30 days initially + 30-day extension).

Make sure you apply before your first 30 days expire, and bring your passport, accommodation details, and fee payment. Work and Dependent Visas can also be renewed, but this must be handled through your sponsor.

What happens if I overstay my Maldives visa?

Overstaying your visa can lead to daily fines, which start at MVR 1,000, and may result in deportation or being banned from returning.

It’s important to apply for an extension if needed and leave the country before your visa expires to avoid legal trouble or travel restrictions in the future.

Do I still need to fill out the Maldives declaration when departing?

No. As of 15 August 2024, the departure declaration was removed, so you only need to fill out the Traveler Declaration before arriving in the Maldives. This makes the process quicker and easier for travelers, especially those with short stays or island-hopping itineraries.

I’m attending a five-day conference, should I apply for a Meeting Maldives Visa or a Maldives Business Visa?

It depends on the nature of the event. If it’s a formal, invite-only conference or seminar, and the organizer can sponsor you, it’s better to use a Meeting Visa, which is tailored for this purpose and helps avoid confusion at immigration.

However, if you're also planning to do other activities, such as negotiating contracts, attending a training, or managing a project, a Business Visa may still be required.

Is a yellow-fever certificate required to enter Maldives?

Only if you have been in, or transited through, a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission for more than 12 hours. If you haven’t passed through one of those countries recently, you don’t need to provide any vaccination certificates to enter the Maldives.
