Summary
  • Ghana has launched its official e-visa portal, allowing travelers to apply and pay for visas entirely online.
  • African nationals will be eligible for a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) starting May 25, 2026.
  • The new system will eliminate the need for in-person embassy visits for many travelers.

Ghana prepares for electronic visa launch with new portal

Ghana is moving closer to the full implementation of its electronic visa system with the launch of an official application portal. Operated by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new platform allows international travelers to complete their entire visa process online, including eligibility checks, document uploads, and fee payments.

According to the Ghana Immigration Service, the portal is designed to streamline entry for several categories, including tourism, business, family visits, transit, and study. The system follows a recent cabinet approval of the e-visa policy, which aims to modernize the country’s border management.

New Ghana visa categories and processing fees

The portal outlines a variety of visa types with associated costs based on processing speed. For a standard single-entry visa, travelers can expect a processing time of approximately 72 hours at a cost of $260. For those requiring more urgent travel, a priority service is available for $338, which reduces the processing time to 48 hours.

The platform also supports more complex visa types, such as short-term and long-term work visas, as well as diplomatic and official categories. Travelers must still provide standard documentation, including a passport biodata page, proof of accommodation, and a return flight ticket.

Free travel authorization for African nationals

A significant feature of the new system is the digital facilitation for African citizens. Starting May 25, 2026, African travelers are expected to benefit from a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This initiative aligns with Ghana’s goal to foster continental integration while maintaining security protocols.

"With smart policies, we are consolidating Ghana's enviable reputation... as the nation fully utilizing technology to guarantee a fast and convenient travel experience," stated Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, in a recent update regarding the digital shift.

Streamlining the traveler experience to Ghana

The digital shift is part of a broader effort to reduce administrative bottlenecks at Ghanaian embassies and consulates worldwide. By centralizing applications through the GIS portal, authorities aim to provide a more transparent and predictable visa issuance process.

Travelers are encouraged to verify their specific requirements directly on the official portal, as documentation may vary based on the purpose of visit and the applicant's nationality. This infrastructure marks a final step in Ghana's digital transformation of its borders, ensuring the nation remains a top destination for investment and tourism in West Africa.
