Ghana's cabinet has approved a new electronic visa policy that will allow African travelers to apply online at no cost from May 25, 2026.
According to a post shared by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on his Facebook page on Saturday, the e-visa system will cover travelers visiting Ghana for business and tourism.
"Cabinet has approved our new e visa policy. The e-visa regime covers those traveling to Ghana for business and tourism," Ablakwa wrote.
President John Dramani Mahama first announced the policy on April 2, 2026, during a state visit by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa. He confirmed that African travelers would be able to apply for e-visas online at no cost starting May 25, coinciding with Africa Day.
Fee removed, application process remains
Under the current system, African Union nationals who obtain a visa on arrival pay US$200 for a stay of up to 30 days. From May 25, that fee will no longer apply to African passport holders.
However, travelers will still need to complete the visa application and screening process.
"Africans will still have to go through a visa application process like everyone else, theirs would simply be gratis," Ablakwa explained.
Security measures in place
The e-visa platform will be linked to Ghana's Advanced Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record systems, as well as international crime databases. This will allow authorities to conduct background checks before travelers arrive in the country.
A welcoming message
Ablakwa framed the policy as part of the government's broader economic and diplomatic agenda.
"When others make you feel unwelcome, Ghana says this is your home to invest and to enjoy the beauty of nature," he wrote.
He added that the government is building on Ghana's reputation as a peaceful and welcoming destination while using technology to make travel faster and more convenient.
With this policy, Ghana joins Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles in offering visa-free or fee-free access to African nationals.
