New Zealand to shift group visa applications online in July

Immigration New Zealand will shift Group Visitor Visa and Tour Escort Visitor Visa applications to its enhanced Immigration Online system from July 20, 2026, as part of a wider digital overhaul of the country's immigration services.

According to an announcement posted on the New Zealand Immigration website, the upcoming move is aimed at making visa processing faster, simpler, and more user-friendly for applicants, immigration staff, and tourism operators. The transition will cover Group Visitor Visas, Approved Destination Status (ADS) Visitor Visas, and Tour Escort Visitor Visas.

Under the new process, fresh applications submitted from July 20, 2026, will automatically move through the upgraded online system. Immigration New Zealand said it will release more details closer to the transition date.

Aiming for faster processing and digital services

The upcoming change is part of the government's "Our Future Services" programme, which seeks to modernise New Zealand's immigration system through digital services, automation, and improved risk management tools.

The upgraded system is designed to improve customer experience by reducing waiting times, giving applicants clearer updates on application status, and increasing self-service options.

"We are aiming to deliver a simpler, faster and more user-friendly visa application process to reduce waiting times, provide clear communication on application status, and increase self-service capabilities so everyone feels more informed and better supported," the announcement stated.

New application-sharing feature planned

The agency is also building a feature that will allow applicants to share Group Visitor Visa applications with other group members and tour agency staff involved in the process.

Officials noted the new system was developed after consultations with visa processing staff, immigration professionals, and tourism sector representatives, including ADS agents.

Paper applications may be reviewed

The announcement also indicated that paper-based applications for these visa categories may be reviewed in the future, although no immediate changes have been announced.

Part of broader digital transition

The enhanced Immigration Online platform was first introduced in 2021. Since then, New Zealand has already moved several visa categories onto the system, including international student visas, visitor visas, Accredited Employer Work Visas, and permanent resident visas.
