Afghanistan has launched an e-Visa system for tourists, allowing travelers to apply for a visa entirely online for the first time. Applications are submitted through the E-Afghans Portal, and once approved, the visa can be downloaded and printed before travel.
The system removes the need to visit an Afghan embassy, obtain a letter of invitation, or travel to a third country such as Dubai, Islamabad, or Tehran to collect the visa. The e-Visa system appears to be run by the Afghan Consulate in Dubai.
The e-Visa allows a single entry with 90 days' validity from the date of issue. Travelers can stay for a maximum of 30 days and must enter Afghanistan within the visa validity period.
Eligible nationalities
The system accepts many nationalities, with successful applications reported from travelers holding passports from Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom. However, the full list of eligible nationalities has not yet been published.
The portal includes an eligibility checker where applicants can select their nationality and country of residence to confirm whether they qualify for the e-Visa.
How the e-Visa works
Applicants must provide a clear scan of their passport biodata page, which must be valid for at least six months. A colored passport-style photograph with a white background (45mm x 35mm) is also required. For applicants under 18, a clear copy of a parent's passport is needed.
Additional documents include a copy of a national identity card or residence permit, if applicable. Supporting documents, such as an itinerary and accommodation proof, are optional.
Processing time and fees
Standard processing takes approximately 1 to 4 weeks, while express processing is available for one-business-day approval at an additional cost.
Current reported costs are approximately US$8 for the application fee and US$120 for the visa fee, bringing the total to around US$128. Express processing may increase the total cost.
Where the e-Visa is accepted
At the moment, travelers report the e-Visa being accepted at Kabul International Airport. Acceptance at other airports, including Mazar-e-Sharif, Kandahar, and Herat International Airports, has not yet been confirmed. Land border crossings have also not been confirmed to accept the e-Visa.
