A policy allowing eligible visitors from China and Pacific Island Forum countries to travel to New Zealand from Australia using an NZeTA instead of a visa is driving a significant tourism boost. According to a new survey, 85% of respondents said the NZeTA option was a deciding factor in their decision to visit New Zealand.
Immigration New Zealand published the findings three months after the policy was introduced on November 3, 2025. The results show that 85% of Chinese travelers and 82% of Pacific Island visitors said they chose New Zealand specifically because the NZeTA became available.
Director Visa (Border) Sarah Clifford said:
"Being able to travel with an NZeTA from Australia makes it easier and cheaper for eligible Chinese and Pacific travellers to choose New Zealand for their holiday, and we're seeing that they're doing just that. Tourism is a vital part of our economy, and the early results show these changes are helping people choose New Zealand more often."
Strong uptake since launch
Since the change took effect, Immigration New Zealand has received more than 47,000 NZeTA requests from Chinese and Pacific nationals. Over 28,500 travelers have already arrived in the country using the new system.
The survey found that travelers consistently described the NZeTA process as easy, convenient, and fast. Most applicants received a decision within one to two days, often faster than expected. The simplicity and speed of the process allowed travelers to plan trips more spontaneously and confidently.
