With over 1.2 billion people, Africa is big. The African continent is comparable in size to India, Canada and the United States of America combined. Nigeria is not just one of the 54 countries in Africa, it is the Giant of Africa. It is called this because it has the largest population and economy of the African continent. with about 200 million inhabitants, it is also the seventh most populated nation on Earth. The country borders Niger to the north, Chad to the northeast, Cameroon to the east, and Benin to the west. Its coast in the south is located on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. Nigeria generally enjoys a hot climate and two major seasons which are the rainy and dry season. Each lasts about half of the year. After only India and China, Nigeria has the third largest population of under eighteen-year old’s in the world. Lagos is the largest city and former capital of Nigeria. In 1991 the capital was moved North to the city of Abuja. Lagos is considered by most to be Nigeria’s busiest city. It also takes the throne as the largest city anywhere on the African continent with over 21 million people calling it home. When visiting Lagos, make sure to head over to Lekki Conservation Centre to take in the Canopy walk. This is home to Africa’s longest canopy walkway. It is a whopping 401 meters long! Lagos is famous for its terrible traffic. Nothing really prepares you for it, even if you have visited other global cities that are infamous for this same reason. You can only feel sorry for your taxi driver as they try to navigate through this city’s nightmare traffic. It is quite common to see drivers making five lanes out of a three-lane motorway and try to push their way in front of the cars next to them. Contrary to the misconception that many people have of Nigerian, when you arrive in the country you will quickly discover that Nigerians are some of the friendliest people in the world. If as a visitor you are kind and polite to them, they will be twice as kind and polite to you. Also, near Lagos, visitors should make time to visit The National Museum on Lagos Island. Here, it is possible to learn more about the Yoruba culture. In the South of the country, visitors will find one of the largest river systems in the world. In fact, the Niger Delta River is the third largest delta on the planet. Although the official language of Nigeria is English, over 500 languages are spoken in the multicultural nation. After English, major languages in Nigeria include Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo. Pidgin, which is a mixture of English and native languages, is also spoken by many Nigerians. Nigeria is also home to some terrific food. Two of the country’s famous national dishes are Pounden Yam and Jollof Rice. Pounded Yam typically accompanied by a soup such as Egusi, Okra, Ogbono, or Vegetable soup, while Jollof rice is more of a stew of tomato and rice, often served with goat or lamb. Nigeria has very high levels of oil reserves. Along with oil, the nation exports rubber and cacao. The Nigerian film industry, called Nollywood, is the second largest feature film producer in the world. On average, the Nigerian film industry produces over 1,000 films per year.
