Portugal visa policy

Most foreign nationals who are not visa-exempt must obtain a visa before traveling to Portugal for tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment, or short-term study. Citizens of visa-exempt countries, including the United States, can visit Portugal for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. Once implemented, visa-exempt travelers will need to obtain an approved ETIAS before departure.

Portugal applies Schengen rules for short stays. Travelers must ensure they hold the correct visa or travel authorization before departure and meet all entry conditions.

General Portugal visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure and issued within the last 10 years
  • Recent passport-size photo
  • Travel itinerary, including accommodation details
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay
  • Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 within the Schengen Area

FAQs

Yes. A valid Schengen Visa issued by another Schengen country allows you to travel to Portugal, provided your visa is still valid and you have not exceeded your permitted stay within the Schengen Area. However, you should apply through the country that is your main destination or first point of entry, according to Schengen rules.
The Portugal Schengen Visa (Type C) is a short-stay visa for tourism, business visits, or family travel. The Digital Nomad Visa (D8) is a long-stay national visa designed for remote workers earning income from outside Portugal and intending to reside in the country for an extended period. The D8 visa has income thresholds and residency requirements that do not apply to short-stay visas.
No. A short-stay Schengen Visa cannot be converted into a long-term residence permit from within Portugal. If you intend to work, reside long term, or apply for residency under a national visa category, you must apply before traveling.
Short stays in Portugal follow the Schengen rule allowing up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. The 180-day window is calculated backward from each day of stay, and time spent in other Schengen countries counts toward the same total.
Overstaying your permitted stay may result in fines, administrative penalties, and potential entry bans within the Schengen Area. Overstays are recorded and can negatively impact future visa applications. Travelers who need additional time must apply for an extension before their authorized stay expires.
