United States visa policy

Most foreign nationals must obtain a visa before traveling to the United States, unless they are eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) with an approved ESTA.

Those not eligible for the ESTA must apply for the appropriate visa category (such as a United States B1/B2 tourist/business visa, an F-1 student visa, an H-1B work visa) at a U.S. embassy or consulate in their country of residence.

General United States visa requirements are:

  • Valid passport
  • Completed DS-160 online nonimmigrant visa application form
  • Passport-size photo
  • Supporting documents based on visa type (such as proof of financial means, employment letter, invitation letter, school admission letter, or petition approval notice)

FAQs

Processing times vary by visa type and embassy location. It can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, especially during busy travel seasons.

An ESTA application is usually approved fast, within a day.

The B1 visa is for business travelers (e.g., attending meetings or conferences), while the B2 visa is for tourism, vacations, or medical visits. Most travelers receive a combined B1/B2 visa.

An ESTA allows stays of up to 90 days. Most visitors with a B1/B2 visa are allowed to stay up to 6 months, but the exact length is decided by the immigration officer upon arrival.

You can apply for your B1/B2 visa or ESTA through the government portal or iVisa (or download our mobile app).

No. A B1/B2 visa or ESTA does not permit any kind of employment. You must apply for a work visa, such as an H-1B or L-1, if you plan to take a job in the U.S.

No, an ESTA authorization cannot be extended. If you entered the US on a non-immigrant visa, you can sometimes apply to extend your stay or switch to another visa type at least 45 days before your current one expires.

Overstaying can lead to visa cancellation, fines, or bans on future travel to the United States. It’s important to leave the country before your visa expires or apply for an extension if eligible.

If you’re just transiting through the United States on your way to another country, you may need a C-1 Transit Visa.

However, if you're from a Visa Waiver Program (VWP) country and will be in the U.S. for only a few hours, you still need to apply for an ESTA in advance, even for transit.

In short:

  • You need a C-1 visa or an approved ESTA, depending on your nationality

  • You can’t leave the airport unless you have proper entry permission

  • If you're changing airports or need to stay overnight, you’ll likely need a full visa or ESTA

Our team of iVisa experts will review your documents to ensure you have the best chance of approval. We then send it to the government for processing on your behalf.

Once your visa is approved, we’ll then email you your document or the next steps.
