General British Virgin Islands entry requirements for US travelers are:

US passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date (Passport Cards are accepted for sea travel only; Passport Books are required for all air travel)
Confirmed return or onward flight ticket

Can I work in the BVI while visiting under the visa-free rule?

No. You cannot legally work in the BVI while on a visitor entry. This includes local employment and long-term remote work. To work legally, you must secure a work permit from the Department of Labour and Workforce Development before arriving. You aren't permitted to switch from a visitor status to a worker status while physically in the territory.

How long is the initial entry stamp, and can it be extended?

While US citizens are visa-exempt for six months, immigration officers typically grant an initial entry stamp for one month. If you wish to stay longer, you must visit the Immigration Department in Road Town to apply for an extension of stay. You may be required to show proof of financial support and a confirmed flight out of the territory to receive the extension up to the six-month limit.
