British Virgin Islander visa policy for American citizens

US citizens do not currently need a visa to visit the British Virgin Islands for short stays of up to six months for tourism or business. While visa-exempt, visitors must adhere to strict entry protocols and aren't permitted to work without a specific permit.

US travelers need one British Virgin Islands entry document:

  • British Virgin Islands ED Card: A mandatory digital Embarkation/Disembarkation form that must be completed within 72 hours before arrival. It replaced paper forms in early 2025 and generates a QR code that's required for immigration and customs clearance at all ports of entry.

General British Virgin Islands entry requirements for US travelers are:

  • US passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date (Passport Cards are accepted for sea travel only; Passport Books are required for all air travel)
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay
  • Proof of pre-arranged accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Payment of the $10 Environmental and Tourism Levy upon arrival (applicable to all visitors)
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation (e.g., business invitation letter)

Frequently asked questions about getting the British Virgin Islands visa with a United States passport

No. US citizens can visit the British Virgin Islands visa-free for tourism or business for up to six months. You don't need to apply for a visa at an embassy; you simply receive an entry stamp upon arrival. However, you must have a valid US passport and an approved digital entry authorization.

Yes. Since January 1, 2025, the BVI Online ED Card (Electronic Embarkation/Disembarkation Card) has been a mandatory requirement for all travelers. You must register within 72 hours before arrival. You'll receive a digital QR code that must be presented to immigration officers to gain entry.

Only if you're arriving by sea (e.g., via a cruise ship or private yacht). For all air travel to the British Virgin Islands, a valid US Passport Book is strictly required. Regardless of the document used, it must be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay on the islands.

No. You cannot legally work in the BVI while on a visitor entry. This includes local employment and long-term remote work. To work legally, you must secure a work permit from the Department of Labour and Workforce Development before arriving. You aren't permitted to switch from a visitor status to a worker status while physically in the territory.

While US citizens are visa-exempt for six months, immigration officers typically grant an initial entry stamp for one month. If you wish to stay longer, you must visit the Immigration Department in Road Town to apply for an extension of stay. You may be required to show proof of financial support and a confirmed flight out of the territory to receive the extension up to the six-month limit.
