French visa policy for Mauritian citizens

Mauritian citizens do not currently need a visa to visit France for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, Mauritian travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering France or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

Mauritians will need one French entry document:

  • ETIAS for France: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow Mauritian citizens to enter France for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General France entry requirements for Mauritian travelers are:

  • Mauritius passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the France visa with a Mauritius passport

Mauritian citizens do not need a visa for short stays in France. You can travel for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business using only a biometric passport. Starting in late 2026, you will be required to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For stays exceeding 90 days, a national long-stay visa is required.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for France online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

Mauritian nationals can stay in France for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa for tourism, business, or family visits. This 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen Area combined. For stays longer than three months, you must apply for a national long-stay visa. Be aware that the new ETIAS authorization will be required for these short stays starting in late 2026.

No, Mauritian citizens do not need a visa to transit through France, provided you remain in the international zone of the airport. As a visa-exempt nationality, you are also exempt from the Airport Transit Visa (ATV) requirement. If your transit requires leaving the international zone, such as changing airports, collecting luggage for a separate booking, or staying in a hotel overnight, you can do so visa-free for up to 90 days.

As a Mauritian national, you are eligible for a 90-day visa-free stay in France. Extending a visa-free stay in France is extremely difficult.

Extensions are only granted by a local prefecture under exceptional, unpredictable circumstances, such as medical emergencies (force majeure) or urgent humanitarian reasons. You cannot extend your stay simply for tourism or convenience. If you intend to stay longer than the permitted 90 days, you must apply for a national long-stay visa in Mauritius before your departure.
