Latvia Schengen Visa

Purpose: The Latvia Schengen Visa allows travelers to visit Latvia for tourism, business meetings, family visits, medical treatment, or short-term study.

When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least 3 to 4 weeks before your planned travel date.

Processing time: Most applications are processed within 15 calendar days, though it may take up to 45 days depending on nationality and consulate workload.

Duration and extensions: The visa allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Extensions are granted only in exceptional circumstances.

Entries: The visa may be issued as single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry, depending on your travel plans and the decision of the consulate.

Delivery format: This is a physical visa sticker placed in your passport. Applicants must attend a biometric appointment as part of the process.

Latvia ETA

Purpose: The Latvia ETA is a pre-travel authorization required for certain eligible travelers visiting Latvia for short stays such as tourism or business.

When to apply: It must be obtained before departure. We recommend applying at least a few days before your planned travel date.

Processing time: Most applications are processed within a few business days, depending on nationality and application volume.

Duration and extensions: The permitted stay depends on nationality and approval conditions. The ETA does not allow long-term residence or employment.

Entries: Typically issued for short stays and may allow single or multiple entries depending on approval.

Delivery format: This is a digital travel authorization linked electronically to your passport. Travelers must present confirmation before boarding and upon arrival.

Latvia ETIAS*

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a travel authorization required for visa-exempt nationals visiting Latvia for short stays such as tourism or business. Once implemented, eligible travelers will need to apply online before departure.

Latvia Transit Visa (Type A)*

The Latvia Transit Visa (Type A) is required for certain nationalities transiting through the international transit area of a Latvian airport on their way to a non-Schengen destination. It does not permit entry into Latvia and is valid only for airport transit.

Most foreign nationals who are not visa-exempt must obtain a visa before traveling to Latvia for tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment, or short-term study. Citizens of visa-exempt countries, including the United States, can visit Latvia for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. Once implemented, visa-exempt travelers will need to obtain an approved ETIAS before departure.

Latvia applies Schengen short-stay rules. Travelers must ensure they hold the correct visa or travel authorization before departure and meet all entry conditions.

General Latvia visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure and issued within the last 10 years
  • Recent passport-size photo
  • Travel itinerary, including accommodation details
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay
