Visa types needed for Malta

  • Malta Schengen Visa
  • ETIAS for Malta (coming soon)*

Malta Schengen Visa

Purpose: The Malta Schengen Visa is a short-stay visa that allows eligible non-EU nationals to travel to Malta and other Schengen countries for purposes such as tourism, business, visiting family, or transit.

When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least 6 months in advance.

Duration and extensions: Valid for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or short visits. You can stay in the entire Schengen Area for a total of 90 days per 180-day period.

Entries: The visa is issued as a single-entry or multiple-entry.

Ports of entry: You must apply for your visa at the embassy/consulate of the country that is your main destination, this is where you will stay the longest or where the main purpose of your trip lies. Once you have a valid Schengen Visa (issued by Malta or any Schengen state), you may enter the Schengen Area through any Schengen country at your first port of entry.

Delivery format: Schengen visas are issued as a uniform visa sticker (vignette) affixed in your passport.

ETIAS for Malta (coming soon)*

Purpose: ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is not a visa. It is a pre-travel authorization that will be required for visa-exempt travelers entering Malta and the Schengen Area.

When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least 3 days in advance.

Duration and extensions ETIAS would likely follow the same approach of the UK ETA and US ESTA, where entrance is granted for 90 days over a multiple-year validity period.

Entries: ETIAS will allow multiple entries.

Ports of entry: ETIAS will be valid at any entry port into the Schengen Area.

Delivery format: ETIAS will be electronically linked to your passport, and you’ll need to reapply if your linked passport expires or changes.

*ETIAS is not yet in force. Once implemented, it will be mandatory to have an ETIAS to enter Malta for visa-exempt travelers.

Malta visa policy

Malta follows the Schengen Area visa policy, which regulates short-term entry for non-EU nationals. Travelers from visa-required countries must obtain a Schengen Visa (Type C) before arrival for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, family visits, or transit.

Travelers from visa-exempt countries, like the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, will need to apply for ETIAS when the system is implemented.

General Malta visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival and at least two blank pages
  • Recent photo
  • Biometric information
  • Valid email address
  • Travel details (such as flight information and accommodation address)
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay
  • Proof of ties to the country of residence
  • Travel medical insurance

FAQs

With a Malta Schengen Visa, you can spend up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period in Malta and the wider Schengen Area.

This applies whether you are island-hopping for fun, attending meetings, or visiting friends. If your plans stretch beyond that, you’ll need a different visa or residence permit.

If you're unsure, feel free to contact our team through WhatsApp or iVisa chat during support hours.

It depends on how long you plan to stay and why you are traveling. Short trips for tourism, business, or visiting family usually require a Schengen Visa (Type C). Longer stays, work, study, or relocation require a national visa or residence permit. Visa-exempt travelers will need ETIAS once it becomes mandatory.
ETIAS is an upcoming online travel authorization for travelers who currently enter Malta without a visa. Once it launches, you’ll apply online before traveling. It is not a visa, but it will be required for short stays of up to 90 days in Malta and the Schengen Area.
No. A Schengen Visa is strictly for short stays such as tourism or business visits. If you plan to work in Malta, you must apply for a national visa or residence permit before you travel.
Yes. A Malta-issued Schengen Visa allows you to travel freely across all Schengen countries, as long as your total stay does not exceed the 90-day limit within a 180-day period.
Once you apply, our team and a legal partner specializing in Schengen visas review your application for accuracy and completeness. If anything needs fixing, we’ll flag it early. After approval by the authorities, you’ll receive an email with clear instructions for your next steps.
Think of it as a rolling window rather than a reset button. You can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days total within the last 180 days, counted backward from each day you are there. Leaving the Schengen Area does not reset your allowance. Only time passing does.
A Malta Schengen Visa (Type C) is required for travelers from visa-required countries and must be approved before travel through official channels. ETIAS is not a visa. It is an online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers and will be applied for before departure once implemented. ETIAS is quicker to obtain but does not allow long stays or work and does not replace a visa for travelers who need one.
