How to apply for your Slovakia visa with iVisa.

1

Complete your online application

We’ll guide you through any unclear questions during the application process.

Slovakia Schengen Visa (Type C)

Purpose: The Slovakia Schengen Visa (Type C) is for travelers visiting Slovakia for tourism, business trips, short-term study, or visiting friends and family.

When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least three to four weeks in advance. You can apply up to six months before your departure, but no later than 15 days prior.

Duration and extensions: The visa allows for a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Extensions are only granted in exceptional cases, such as medical emergencies or force majeure.

Entries: Depending on your travel history and needs, it’s issued for single, double, or multiple entries. Frequent travelers may receive a multiple-entry visa valid for one to five years.

Ports of entry: Holders can enter through any international border. Major entry points include M. R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) in Bratislava and Košice Airport (KSC).

Delivery format: The visa is a physical sticker placed in your passport. You must visit an application center or embassy in person to provide biometric data.

ETIAS for Slovakia (coming soon)*

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is not a visa. It's a pre-travel authorization that will be required for visa-exempt travelers entering Slovakia and the Schengen Area.

Travelers from visa-free countries (e.g., the US, UK, Canada, Australia) can visit for tourism, business, or transit. The stay limit is 90 days within a 180-day period.

*ETIAS is not yet in force. Once implemented, it will be mandatory for visa-exempt travelers to enter Slovakia.

Airport Transit Visa (Type A)*

Required for travelers from specific countries who are passing through the international transit area of a Slovak airport without entering the country's territory. It’s strictly for the duration of the airport layover.

*We currently don’t offer this visa.

National Visa (Type D)*

A long-term visa issued for up to 1 year. It’s primarily for those who've applied for a residence permit or those whose stay is in the interest of the Slovak Republic (e.g., highly qualified workers, students in specific exchange programs). It allows you to stay in Slovakia and travel to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days.

*We currently don’t offer this visa.

Digital Nomad / Remote Work Visa*

A specialized national visa for remote workers employed by companies outside Slovakia. Applicants must prove a minimum monthly income and location-independent work. It’s typically valid for 1 year and serves as a bridge to temporary residency.

*We currently don’t offer this visa.

Employment and Business Permits*

The Employment Permit is for foreigners with a local job offer and a single permit (combined work and residence). The Business Permit is for entrepreneurs or self-employed individuals (SĹľivnostnĂci) with a verified business plan. Both are generally valid for 1 to 3 years and are renewable.

*We currently don’t offer these permits.

Study and Research Permits*

For students enrolled in accredited Slovak universities or language schools (with at least 25 lessons/week). The Research Permit is for those with a hosting agreement for scientific research. Validity matches the duration of the program, up to 6 years for students.

*We currently don’t offer these permits.

Family Reunification Permit*

For the spouse, minor children, or dependent parents of a person who already holds a Slovak residence permit or is a Slovak citizen. Validity is usually tied to the sponsor’s permit (up to 5 years).

*We currently don’t offer this permit.

Slovakia visa policy

Most foreign nationals must obtain a Schengen Visa before traveling to Slovakia for tourism, business, study, or work. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, and Australia are exempt from this requirement for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Slovakia doesn’t offer a traditional Visa on Arrival (VoA) service. Citizens of EU and EEA member states do not require a visa for any length of stay.

Travelers entering Slovakia are required by law to complete a Notice of Stay (Police Registration) within three working days of arrival; while hotels handle this automatically, those in private rentals must submit it to the Foreign Police.

General Slovakia visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen Area and issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed and signed visa application form
  • Recent passport-size photo meeting Schengen requirements
  • Travel details (such as flight reservation and accommodation address)
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay
  • Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000 within the Schengen Area
  • Proof of purpose of travel

FAQs

For a Schengen Visa (Type C), decisions are typically made within 15 calendar days. However, this can extend to 45 days if additional documents are needed. National Visas (Type D) for work or study usually take about 30 days.

You should only apply through Slovakia if it's your primary destination (where you’ll spend the most time). If you’re staying an equal number of nights in two countries (for example, 4 nights in Slovakia and 4 in Hungary), you must apply at the embassy of the country you'll enter first.

You must have a valid Green Card (international insurance), the vehicle's registration document, and a digital highway vignette before entering any motorway. Slovakia has a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol (0.00% blood alcohol content).

Our team works with a legal partner specializing in Schengen Visas. They will review your application to ensure its accuracy and completeness. Once the authorities approve it, you’ll receive an email with the next steps.

The “90/180-rule” means you can stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days total within any continuous 180-day window. The 180-day period is not fixed, it is counted backward from each day you are in the Schengen Area.

Example:

  • You enter the Schengen Area on January 1
  • You stay for 30 days and leave on January 30
  • In the last 180 days, you’ve used 30 days
  • You still have 60 days left to use

If you later return:

  • You stay 40 more days
  • Now you’ve used 70 days total
  • You only have 20 days left until older days “drop off” the 180-day window
  • Leaving the Schengen Area “resets” nothing - only time does
