Our Tanzania visa application process

How to apply for your Tanzania visa with iVisa

1

Complete your online application

Answer a few simple questions, upload your documents, see when you’ll get your visa, and pay using secure methods. You can save your progress and come back anytime. Most people finish in under 30 minutes.

The Tanzania Tourist eVisa and Tanzania Business eVisa are our most popular travel documents for this destination. We’ll guide you through any unclear questions during the application process.

2

We review your application

The Tanzania visa system is known for being a bit picky – your photo must be the right size, and your passport scan must be clear.

Don’t worry – we review your whole application to catch anything that might cause delays. One of our experts checks everything for errors or missing information to make sure it’s ready to go. This review is quick but thorough.

3

We submit it for government processing

We’re not the government, but we submit your application to them and are here for you along the way if there are any problems.

4

Get your Tanzania visa

We’ll email your approved eVisa and let you know how to use it for your trip.

Tanzania visa policy

Tanzania issues different visa types depending on the purpose of travel. The Ordinary Visa is intended for most tourists, though US citizens must apply for a Multiple Entry Visa. The Multiple Entry Visa is also suitable for travelers making frequent visits, such as company directors, spouses of residents, or participants in bilateral government meetings.

Business travelers attending short-term assignments like equipment repairs, feasibility studies, or training should apply for a Business Visa. Transit Visas are available for those passing through the country, Gratis Visas are reserved for diplomats and officials, and Student Visas cover study, internships, or volunteer programs. Students from visa-exempt countries must instead apply for a Student Pass.

Visa eligibility varies by nationality. Some travelers can apply online or obtain a visa on arrival, while others require a referral visa, which must be approved before traveling. Referral applicants are advised to submit their requests at least two months before departure and provide documents such as an invitation letter and local host details.

Tanzania exempts certain nationals from visa requirements, including citizens of East African Community states, most Southern African Development Community countries, and some Commonwealth nations. As the government regularly updates these lists, travelers should check the latest requirements before applying.

FAQs

The Tanzania eVisa is an official travel document that allows eligible foreign nationals to enter Tanzania for tourism, business, or transit purposes. It can be applied for online through the official Tanzania Immigration Services website before traveling.

Nationals of eligible countries can apply for the eVisa. Some nationalities are required to obtain prior approval before their application can be processed.

The Tanzania eVisa can be used for tourism, visiting friends or relatives, attending meetings, workshops, and short-term business activities. Travelers cannot engage in employment or other long-term work activities with an eVisa.

The duration of stay depends on the visa type. For tourism and most short-term business visits, the eVisa allows stays of up to 90 days. For multiple-entry visas, each visit allows a stay of up to 90 days, although the visa itself may be valid for a longer period.

Yes, U.S. citizens must apply for a Multiple Entry Visa when visiting Tanzania for tourism or holiday purposes. They are not eligible for the Ordinary Single Entry Visa.

Applicants typically need a valid passport with at least six months' validity, a passport-size photo, a return or onward ticket, and supporting documents based on the purpose of the visit.

No, the Tanzania eVisa does not permit employment. Travelers intending to work must apply for the appropriate Work or Residence Permit before traveling.

The Tanzania Transit Visa allows foreign nationals to enter Tanzania for the sole purpose of transiting to another destination. It is valid for up to seven days and requires proof of onward travel and entry permission to the next country.

Travelers passing through Tanzania on their way to another country and who do not qualify for visa-free entry must apply for a Transit Visa. It is not intended for tourism or business visits.

The Ordinary Visa is a single-entry visa mainly for tourism and short visits, valid for up to 90 days. The Multiple Entry Visa allows multiple entries within a validity period, typically up to one year, with each stay limited to 90 consecutive days. U.S. citizens are required to apply for the Multiple Entry Visa even for a single tourist visit.

Tanzania visas generally cannot be extended beyond the validity period granted. Travelers needing to stay longer must exit the country and apply for a new visa if eligible.

Yes, every traveler, including minors, must have their own separate visa application submitted. Minors cannot be included in their parents’ visa applications.
