Summary
  • Canadians need a Germany ETIAS from 2026, to enter Germany and other Schengen countries for short stays.

  • ETIAS requirements include a valid passport, and basic personal and travel information.

  • The ETIAS is valid for 3 years and allows multiple entries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Canadians planning a trip to Germany - or anywhere in the Schengen area - in 2026, may soon need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System).

This new entry requirement will be mandatory for all Canadian visitors to the Schengen zone. Find out the most up-to-date news about the ETIAS here.

Do Canadians need an ETIAS now?

No, the ETIAS will come into effect in late 2026. Until then, you can visit Germany and the rest of Europe without a visa or ETIAS.

💡Femke Strietman, iVisa travel expert, recommends:

"The ETIAS has been pushed back a couple of times, but is expected to be implemented in 2026. Make sure to bookmark or share this page for your 2026 trip to Europe. We'll update it as soon as more info becomes available."

Key ETIAS requirements to apply

To be eligible, Canadian travelers must::

✔️ Hold a valid Canadian passport (with at least 3 months' validity beyond their planned departure date)

✔️ Have a clean criminal record

✔️ Provide a valid email address

✔️ A credit/debit card or other secure payment method is required to pay the ETIAS fees

How to apply for the Germany ETIAS from Canada

Canadian citizens can complete the ETIAS application online in three easy steps:

  1. Fill out the online form on the official ETIAS website, the iVisa website, or our mobile app.

The application typically asks for basic personal details, passport information, your intended travel itinerary, and answers to standard security and health questions.

  1. Pay the processing fee + iVisa service fee.

  2. Wait for confirmation by email.

💡Femke Strietman, iVisa travel expert, adds:

"You don't need to print anything. The ETIAS is linked to the passport you've used for the application, so make sure to travel with that same passport when your trip is due."

ETIAS validity and how long you can stay

The Germany ETIAS is valid for up to 3 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries to the Schengen area, with stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Travelers can visit 30 countries, and once you’re in, you can travel freely within the area.

Frequently asked questions about the ETIAS

Can I apply if I have a criminal record?

Yes, but your case will be reviewed individually. Minor offenses often don’t affect eligibility, but full disclosure is essential.

Can I extend my stay beyond 90 days?

No, the ETIAS only allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period (also called the 90/180 rule). For longer stays, a different type of visa is required.

However, you're free to come back after the 180-day period is over, if the ETIAS hasn't expired yet.

Is the ETIAS linked to my passport?

Yes, your ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport number. Make sure to travel with the same passport you used to apply.
