Travelers will soon obtain a QR code for entry as Egypt digitizes its arrival procedures at Cairo International Airport
Starting August 2026, the Egyptian government will launch a new digital visa-on-arrival system at Cairo International Airport. The initiative aims to modernize the entry process for eligible international visitors by replacing traditional paper stickers with a secure digital QR code.
The announcement follows a formal signing ceremony witnessed by Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. According to the Egyptian Gazette, the agreements were finalized between the implementing technology firm, CyShield, and two major financial institutions, the National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr.
This technological shift follows recent administrative changes, as Egypt increases tourist e-visa fees to support the expansion of its digital infrastructure and tourism services.
Digitizing the Egypt arrival experience
The new system is designed to streamline the flow of passengers and reduce congestion within airport terminals. While the eligibility criteria for a visa on arrival remain unchanged, the method of issuance is undergoing a significant transformation.
Instead of queuing at bank counters to purchase a physical visa sticker, travelers will enter their details through dedicated digital channels. These include self-service kiosks located at the airport, an official online platform, and a mobile application.
Once the visa and service fees are paid electronically, the system generates a QR code that immigration officers can scan to verify entry authorization.
"The importance of the new system lies in supporting Egypt's efforts to improve the tourist experience from the moment visitors arrive and facilitating procedures at Egyptian airports," stated Prime Minister Madbouli during the event.
Implementation timeline and rollout of the visa on arrival
The digital transition is scheduled to begin across all terminals at Cairo International Airport in August 2026. This initial phase serves as the foundation for a broader national rollout. Following the successful deployment in the capital, the Egyptian government plans to gradually expand the digital system to all other airports across the country.
For those who prefer to plan ahead, the system will also allow visitors to obtain their digital visa up to 48 hours before arrival or through authorized travel agencies.
What this means for travelers to Egypt
The shift from paper stickers to QR codes is expected to significantly reduce wait times at passport control. Travelers can choose to apply via kiosks at the airport, a mobile app, or the official website before they fly.
The new system moves away from cash-heavy transactions, requiring fees to be paid through secure electronic methods. Travelers entering through other Egyptian airports than Cairo should continue to follow existing paper-based protocols until the nationwide rollout is complete.
