Key points

  • The key change: Suriname has reinstated a visa requirement for nationals of Mexico and Bolivia traveling with a national passport, effective October 1, 2026. The measure was announced by Suriname's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation (BIS).
  • Who is exempt: Holders of valid diplomatic or service passports from Mexico and Bolivia are not affected. The requirement applies exclusively to national (ordinary) passport holders.
  • Temporary and under review: The ministry describes the measure as temporary and states it will periodically evaluate the requirement in coordination with relevant agencies. No end date has been announced.
  • How to apply: Travelers must obtain a visa before departure. Applications can be submitted through Suriname's diplomatic and consular missions or through Suriname's official eVisa portal.

Mexican and Bolivian national passport holders must now obtain a visa before traveling to Suriname, reversing a previous visa-free arrangement

Suriname’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation (BIS) announced on September 29, 2026, that nationals of Mexico and Bolivia holding a national passport must obtain a visa before traveling to Suriname, effective October 1, 2026. The measure reverses a visa-free arrangement that had previously allowed citizens of both countries to enter Suriname without a visa, according to Key News Suriname.

Before October 1, 2026, Mexican and Bolivian nationals could travel to Suriname on a national passport without obtaining prior visa authorization. Under the reinstated requirement, travelers from both countries must apply for and receive a visa before departure.

The ministry cited “recent developments in the field of migration” from Mexico and Bolivia as the basis for the decision but did not provide further details on the specific circumstances that prompted the change.

Who is affected and who is exempt?

The visa requirement applies exclusively to Mexican and Bolivian nationals traveling on a national (ordinary) passport. Holders of valid diplomatic passports and service passports from either country remain exempt and can continue to enter Suriname without a visa.

The reinstatement follows a pattern in Suriname’s visa policy. On May 1, 2023, Suriname unilaterally reimposed visa requirements for nationals of 21 countries, citing what authorities described as abuse of visa-free entry privileges. The current action against Mexico and Bolivia represents a more targeted adjustment, affecting only two nationalities rather than a broad group.

How can affected travelers apply for a visa?

Mexican and Bolivian nationals who need to travel to Suriname must apply for their visa before departure. The ministry confirmed that applications can be submitted through two channels: Suriname’s diplomatic and consular representations in the relevant countries, or online through Suriname’s official eVisa portal.

Suriname’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged travelers, airlines, travel agencies, and other stakeholders to take the changed entry conditions into account when booking, planning, and carrying out travel to Suriname.

Is the measure permanent?

The ministry has described the visa reinstatement as a temporary measure. Suriname’s authorities stated they will closely monitor migration developments from Mexico and Bolivia in coordination with relevant agencies and will periodically evaluate whether the requirement should remain in force.

No specific end date has been announced. The ministry stated only that once conditions permit, the entry policy will be reviewed again. The absence of a defined timeline means the requirement remains in effect indefinitely until the ministry publishes a formal revision.
