Key points
- The key change: Turkmenistan's State Migration Service launched an eVisa system on October 1, 2026, allowing foreign nationals to apply for a visa online for the first time. The official portal went fully live on October 2, 2026.
- Three categories available: The portal lists three eVisa types: e-TU (tourism), e-BS (business, up to 30 days), and e-HM (humanitarian). Processing ranges from 7 business days (regular) to 24 hours (super urgent), with fees payable in USD.
- Invitation no longer required for tourists: The most significant change for travelers is the removal of the mandatory invitation letter for the e-TU tourist eVisa. Previously, tourists generally needed an invitation approved by the State Migration Service and arranged through a local travel agency before they could apply for a visa.
- Online registration also launched: A separate portal now allows foreign nationals to complete stay-related registration procedures online, including registration at a place of residence, extensions, and deregistration.
Turkmenistan’s State Migration Service has made one of Central Asia’s most restricted countries substantially more accessible by allowing tourists to apply for a visa online without a prior invitation
Turkmenistan’s State Migration Service announced on September 30, 2026, that its new electronic visa system would go into operation on October 1, 2026. The dedicated application portal went fully live the following day, revealing the practical details of a system that opens Turkmenistan’s entry procedures to online applications for the first time, according to the State Migration Service.
The announcement followed a briefing held by the State Migration Service in Ashgabat, which brought together representatives of diplomatic missions, international organizations, and Turkmen ambassadors and consuls stationed abroad. Turkmenistan’s state news agency confirmed that diplomatic missions were briefed on the new procedures so they could provide information to travelers.
Before October 1, 2026, travelers to Turkmenistan generally had to obtain a letter of invitation in advance, approved by the State Migration Service and usually arranged through a local travel agency or host organization, before applying for a visa at a consulate. The country’s entry procedures have long been ranked among the most restrictive in Central Asia and internationally.
What eVisa categories are available?
The evisa.migration.gov.tm portal lists three types of electronic visa:
e-TU (tourist) is intended for foreign nationals visiting Turkmenistan for tourism. This is the category with the most significant procedural change: no invitation letter is required. Travel itinerary, confirmed hotel reservations, and medical insurance are listed as optional supporting documents on the portal.
e-BS (business) covers business travel for stays of up to 30 days. Unlike the tourist category, the business eVisa still requires an invitation from a Turkmen company.
e-HM (humanitarian) is intended for humanitarian purposes and requires an official letter from a relevant organization.
Do tourists still need an invitation to visit Turkmenistan?
For the tourist eVisa (e-TU), the answer is no. The legal groundwork was laid in April 2025, when Turkmenistan’s parliament amended the country’s migration law to formally introduce electronic visas. The 2025 amendments explicitly provide that an invitation does not need to be arranged or issued in order to obtain an electronic visa.
The removal of the invitation requirement represents the most substantial change for independent tourists. Until now, the invitation process effectively meant that most travelers could only visit Turkmenistan through an organized tour with a licensed local agency. The e-TU eVisa opens the possibility of applying directly, though authorities have not yet confirmed whether all nationalities are eligible or whether any restrictions on independent travel within the country remain in effect.
Business travelers (e-BS) and humanitarian visitors (e-HM) still require an invitation or official letter from a Turkmen entity, maintaining the prior authorization model for those categories.
How does the eVisa application process work?
The State Migration Service offers three processing tiers: regular (7 business days), urgent, and super urgent (24 hours). Application fees are calculated online during the process and are payable in US dollars.
The portal allows applicants to submit documents, upload supporting materials, pay fees, and track the status of their application. An eVisa verification page is also available on the State Migration Service website, allowing issued eVisas to be checked against official records.
The Astana Times reported on October 6, 2026, that the system is intended for tourists, entrepreneurs, and diplomats, and that authorities expect the digitalization to reduce processing times and paperwork. However, as of early October 2026, new user registration functionality was not yet fully visible on the portal. Full details on eligible nationalities, visa validity periods, permitted stay durations, and any restrictions on authorized ports of entry have not yet been comprehensively published.
What is the online registration system for foreign nationals?
The eVisa is not the only immigration procedure that Turkmenistan has moved online. The State Migration Service also launched a separate portal for the registration of foreign nationals and stateless persons staying in the country.
The system allows several stay-related procedures to be completed remotely: registration at a place of residence, extensions of that registration, and deregistration. Foreign nationals, as well as individuals and organizations hosting them, can complete these procedures without visiting a State Migration Service office.
The registration system was already operational before the eVisa launch. Local sources confirmed in August 2026 that the platform was being used for registrations, extensions, and deregistrations.
What details are still being clarified?
The October 1 launch marks the transition of Turkmenistan’s eVisa from a planned system to an officially operational program, but several practical questions remain for travelers as of early October 2026.
The authorities have not yet comprehensively published the full list of eligible nationalities, the validity period of each eVisa category, the exact fee schedule across processing tiers, or whether any restrictions apply to authorized ports of entry. Turkmenistan remains one of the region’s most restrictive countries for visa purposes. The eVisa does not change the underlying requirement for nearly all foreign nationals to obtain a visa. It adds an online application channel but does not create visa-free entry.
Travelers should monitor the government portal and the State Migration Service’s official announcements for updated guidance as the system matures.
