Brazil eVisa now available for Chinese nationals for business events and seafarer activities

Brazil has expanded its electronic visa (eVisa) program to include Chinese nationals for certain categories. On the VFS Global site for the Brazil eVisa, China is now listed alongside the US, Canada, and Australia as an eligible nationality.
However, the eVisa for Chinese nationals is currently available only for business events and seafarer activities. Tourism and transit have not been indicated on the website as eligible purposes.
What the eVisa covers
Business (events and exhibitions only): Chinese nationals can apply for an eVisa to attend events, exhibitions, or trade fairs in Brazil. Engaging in paid activities is prohibited, and the duration of stay cannot exceed 90 days.
Seafarers: The eVisa also covers the performance of continuous maritime activities on board a foreign-flagged vessel or platform operating, or intended to operate, within Brazilian jurisdictional waters.
Tourism not indicated
Unlike other nationalities in the eVisa program, the website has not indicated that Chinese nationals can apply for an eVisa for tourism or transit purposes. Those wishing to visit Brazil for leisure may need to apply through a consulate.
This development follows President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's announcement in January that Brazil would grant visa exemptions for Chinese citizens for short-term travel, reciprocating China's visa-free policy for Brazilian nationals. China's exemption for Brazilians has been in effect since June 1, 2025, and was recently extended until December 31, 2026.
How the Brazil eVisa works
Applicants who are approved will receive a PDF of the eVisa by email. This must be downloaded, printed, and presented when boarding and upon arrival in Brazil. Travelers who do not have a printed copy may be denied boarding. It is also recommended to save a copy on a mobile device for easy access.
Processing takes approximately 10 business days, though authorities recommend applying at least one month before travel to avoid potential delays.
