Austrian visa policy for Taiwanese citizens

Taiwanese citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Austria for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, Taiwanese travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering Austria or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

Taiwanese will need one Austrian entry document:

  • ETIAS for Austria: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow Taiwanese citizens to enter Austria for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Austria entry requirements for Taiwanese travelers are:

  • Taiwan passport valid for at least 3 months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Austria visa with a Taiwan passport

Taiwanese citizens holding biometric passports do not need a visa for Austria for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

By late 2026, all visa-exempt Taiwanese travelers will need a valid ETIAS authorization to enter.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed.

Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for Austria online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

Taiwanese nationals with biometric passports can stay in Austria for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. This limit applies to the entire Schengen Area. Holders of passports issued by the Taiwanese Coordination Directorate still require a visa.

For longer stays, a residency or temporary visa is necessary. Starting in late 2026, an ETIAS will be required.

Extensions are generally not possible.
